How do I know when my group is toxic/when is it time to lateral? I am so burnt out after multiple 2400 years and don’t feel like my group cares at all they’re constantly expecting more from me. Making below market and have the opportunity to make market. At one point I was told I could make partner by my group head but I’m not so sure I want it if this is the cost. I wake up every day hating my job. 4th year.

You're a 4th year and already have had multiple 2400 years making BELOW market? The time to leave was 2 years ago. Get OUT!

It's time. Lateral.

Editing to add: if youre making below market and there are no concessions, like, less hours (below 1800), great culture, vacations are cool, remote work, etc., why are you staying? Also, 2400 is probably the norm at some marketing paying firms (less at others), so if you dont mind 2400, go ahead and leave for a firm that will pay you to work crazy hours.

like

Leave on great terms. But don't let fear of the unknown stop you from trying something new. Most times, its not that bad. It may even be better, especially if the firm is known to recruit lateral associates in. Go to one of those.

like

If you’re at a boutique or in Mid Law, note that the same work and hours may feel easier at a larger firm. This is because the larger firm will have more resources, paralegals, associates, etc. to help you with work.

In-house is also an option. A friend in similar circumstances went that route and is having a better experience.

Grass is greener on the other side. 2400 is not normal at any big law firm, maybe other than Wachtell. Most market paying v50 firms probably have associates averaging 1700/1800.

like

Talk abt partnership as a 4th yr is meaningless anyways

Agreed that you should at least start looking. You're right in the marketable window of experience to lateral without it impacting your promotion trajectory, and that window could close sooner rather than later if this war continues on unabated.

like

What city you're in makes a big difference in whether your hours are "normal" or not, as does your practice. 2400 is high for most firms, even NY, and is probably not worth it if you are not getting paid market. If you have the creds, you can move to a better-paying firm and bill closer to 2000, depending on the firm.
