How do I stop caring so much about what others think about me?

Go through an abusive employment situation where you realize they're going to screw you over no matter how hard you work on people pleasing & experience stress burnout to the point where you just say fxxk it and can't muster any energy to care.

Funnily enough, people seem to think better of you afterwards

By realizing that when the chips are down, those people aren't going to be there to help you.

“Oh, they'll be around, but when yo' paper get low - just like Master P said, ‘There they go, there they go...”

Accept that you’re probably at least reasonably competent, or you wouldn’t be in this occupation. Understand that to greater or lesser extent, literally everyone is winging it. Commit to not caring about criticism from anyone whose advice you would not seek.

Do the work. Make sure it’s quality. Stand behind it (and accept constructive criticism).

You gain confidence in your choices. That's how.
When you are proud of your choices and have witnessed first hand how they were the better long term choice as opposed to the alternative at the time, you'll realize you do make good decisions overall.
You'll stop falling for the hype talk that most people do, the low key flex, the subtle show off and realize that they have either just learnt that life lesson before you, or often just continue to make mistakes but in different areas that maybe you don't see.
Confidence comes from experience. Experience comes from lessons learnt. Lessons learnt comes from analyzing your mistakes.

But what to do when you clearly drop the ball, but it wasn’t intentional and you simply had too much on your plate? That’s where I struggle. I know I deserve criticism, because I made a mistake. But at the same time I know I was doing my best, yet that happened. And that’s when my impostor syndrome kicks in big time

I think your mindset can help in this regard. For example, think of it as feedback and opportunity to be more rigorous in the future, as opposed to "criticism". Also, let go of the notion that the only acceptable level is perfection. You want to minimize mistakes of course, but part of learning and growing is working through mistakes that can happen to anyone.

Have a contemptuous personality. Lol

I realized the only thing I can control is me. When I realized their view was not in my control I stopped caring as much of the opinion of others. Then I realized the only vote that counts is mine and I vote that I'm a pretty big deal.

Know that almost everyone feels this way. Some just hide their need for affiliation better than others.
