A lot of people in health informatics don’t have any healthcare experience, so the fact that you’re an OT puts you at an advantage I feel. And you also have user experience with an EHR.
Informatics impacts everyone in health care. Universities are starting to offer master’s program in Health Informatics. Thus, anyone can seek a job related to Informatics. Seeking jobs within healthcare organizations will need a lot of networking in order to land a job. You might have a better chance with IT vendors.
I just started a job in this field as a non-RN. I have experience in a clinical setting (orthopedics) working as clinical staff and later in management, but education in athletic training/sports medicine. In my scenario, the team was looking to bring someone onto their informatics team specifically to "service" their Orthopedic/Neurology providers. It's certainly possible!
