How do you deal with regrets? Had a job offer than was lateralish paywise (current role pays ~6k more in bonus) but a title bump. Didn't take it because moving in this market for lateral pay seemed risky (esp since their bonus didn't pay out last year) but now am feeling remorse because I'm in a niche and roles can take a while to come by and I'm worried other places pass me over due to lack of title

I think about them every second of every single day.

In between, I would curl into a ball and cry.

Whoever gave my post an uplifting emote.

Take a bow. You made me laugh.

As someone who has these conversations with candidates every day, I would reach back out to the company and see if there is any opportunity still available. Being honest with them might go a long way, especially if they felt you were a good fit. I am always open to helping network (we are hiring too) if you need guidance.

I think lateral moves for the same title and same pay are fine. If you want a title bump tho, I would argue for more pay.

That said, if this move would’ve made sense for your desired career progression, maybe it would’ve made sense for you so you can begin that part of your journey. Staying in public (or any role) for X number of years just cuz everyone else is doing it means less if you get to jump to the type of role you wanted all along. Better to start now rather than hanging on for an arbitrary reason

Similar pay kind of sucks, but I’ve learned recruiters and hiring managers REALLLLLLY care about titles. Manager vs senior associate automatically qualifies you for 30k+ more salary when you go to look for your next job

like

Then it probably wasn’t much of a loss or the best opportunity out there for you. You didn’t need it.

Get your cpa if you haven’t done so already and it’ll help boost that resume. Being niche is tough but at end of day you can focus on your actual audit procedures to showcase you’re capable of working in other industries. I just assisted in another dept and yea it was tough at first but was doable. Might be a bit harder finding work but it’ll eventually come, stay positive. Good luck
