I will happily, openly tell my coworkers my salary. It is literally a labor right that was fought over 90 years ago. The only ones who benefit when that information is kept secret is the company.
I have no qualms with telling people how much I make, the issue is more that when people know what you make, it often changes their mental model or how they view you. I’m not saying everyone is like that, but often, it can lead to relationships changing, jealousy or a sense of superiority depending on whether you make more or less than them and by how much the difference is. Once someone has that in their heads it can make things weird.
I am completely about salary transparency. I think it’s important to know at least relatively what you’re making compared to others in similar roles, but you have to be careful with who you have those conversations with, lest your worth become anchored to a dollar value instead of who you are or what you bring to the relationship

I really appreciate how you put that. It’s not the number itself; it’s the story people attach to it. Once someone knows what you make, it can subtly change how they see you, even if they don’t mean to. I’m with you on transparency being important, especially to avoid being undervalued. But I agree it takes discernment. Not everyone can separate your salary from your worth as a person, and that’s where things can get weird.
I don't care at all. I'm an open book about most things in life. If someone asks, I'm happy to tell them.
I've never gotten into conversations about salary with coworkers. It's partly because I consider it my own private business, and it's also because my colleagues seem to find it inappropriate to talk about. I can understand how transparency could perhaps help people understand if they're being undervalued, but it seems like it could get complicated. I agree that if it turns into people making comparisons it's going to be awkward and problematic.

That makes total sense. It is personal, and if the culture already sees it as inappropriate, that’s hard to push against. Agreed it can get messy if it turns into comparison. For me, it’s only felt helpful in 1 on 1 conversations with someone I really trust. It's more of a quiet reality check than a big discussion.

I'm fine to share when people ask me directly. But I always lowball it by about ~10%

I actually get that. It’s like you’re willing to be open, but you still want a little cushion so it doesn’t feel too exposed.

Has to be someone I really trust
First of all, discussing salary is a protected act. You can't be reprimanded or fired for it. Secondly, it's personal. If you want to talk about salary with coworkers, then do so if you're comfortable doing that.

When I was in the office I would make salary talks part of the water cooler conversation. It was an easy way to make it casual and a lot of people were willing to share. Now that I’m fully remote, the only times I talk to coworkers are on very specific work calls so it’s much more awkward asking. I avoid it altogether these days.

That’s so real. In person, those random, casual moments made it feel natural, just like it just came up in conversation. Over virtual meetings, everything feels scheduled and intentional, so bringing up salary can feel way more loaded than it actually is. The setting can really change the vibe!
