How do you politely interrupt a rambling interviewer to make sure you actually get to speak? I sat through a 30-minute interview where the hiring manager talked for 28 minutes and then told me we were out of time for my questions. I learned everything about his philosophy on leadership and nothing about what my day-to-day would actually look like.

Don't ever interrupt the interviewer. They control the dialogue, not you. Let them talk as long as they want, it means less opportunities for you to say something wrong. If they're dominating the conversation it means they're probably already comfortable and don't feel the urge to interrogate you. When they ask a ton of questions and put you on the defensive that's when they're not sure about you. Hiring managers are busy, they're not going to ramble on for 30 min if they don't like you, they'd just look for reasons to disqualify you or get off the call. The key is to be a good listener. Use your body language to show you're engaged and interested and be prepared to ask followup questions about things they said. Even if you don't get to say much, just being a great listener will make them feel more connected with you and there's a good chance they'll schedule another interview. However, if your body language says you're frustrated and losing patience they'll pick up on that. Just smile and say you look forward to continuing the conversation. Now if you barely got two sentences out and they still pass on you it sounds like they're either very disorganized or not real serious about hiring.

Did you get the job?

Let them talk. Then at the end ask questions that show you were listening i.e. when you said x, y, z, it made me think of x,y,z and (question)

Remember that they are there to listen rather they like it or not. You probably just got a talker. I usually just chime in at a pause and if they start talking I just keep speaking. It shows you’re not a push over, confident and are not afraid to speak up. Obviously there’s a line you don’t want to cross

I don't know how many times you've been on the hiring side of the interview process but I've been on that side plenty, and if some overconfident douchebag came in and started interrupting me and hijacking the conversation they'd be out of there. An interview is not about proving you're not a pushover, it's about going along with the interviewer's agenda and selling yourself. You can be confident without being rude. They control the interview, not you.

This is a tricky situation. I had an interviewer who assumed I didn’t have experience with something that I actually did have experience in and he went on and on telling the other interviews as to not consider me for this point. I had to interrupt him to say that actually I did have this experience and at their company . Well the in the feed back to the recruiter the same interviewer that was stating incorrect info about my experience had complained about my interruption even though it was to correct his incorrect comments about my experience.

However, I am worried if I accept the tech role and I do not become permanent I will be looking again for a job in 12-24 months and my CV won't be showing a managerial position. Won't be showing any progress.
