How do you push back against the ‘old-school’ leadership styles in your company? I’m a VP in my 30s and I’m constantly fighting an uphill battle with older execs who still believe in command-and-control leadership. It’s exhausting trying to introduce more collaborative methods while dealing with resistance. Has anyone here managed to change the culture in this situation or did you just end up burning bridges?

You could start by not lumping all people who are “older” into the same category, as if it’s some kind of intrinsic flaw of theirs. That’s called ageism.

And if you want a more “collaborative” culture, maybe start by learning how to collaborate better with people who think differently than you.

If you want to change traditional methods, talk alone won't do it. You'll need to demonstrate some results that could or would accrue from principles like empowerment or collaboration. Do some research and present data that makes your case. And, try to find allies, other potential forward-thinking leaders to support your message.

Thoughts on leaving PA primarily due to the metrics based culture (utilization, dtc, use of X digital tool, revenue, margin, etc). Anyone looking at traveling to Costa Rica? They have a list of states from which they will admit tourists while also requiring a negative covid test, health history, etc. As someone not on the approved list, I am bitter and curious why the population is grouped at a state level when there are massively different rates of infection within each state (not to mention personal responsibility) and you are already required to present a negative test. Any idea how often those lists get updated?

Cisco

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Bit of a niche topic: I’ve been in TS/SCI processing for a Science/Tech/Weapons analyst position with the CIA for 3 yrs since I finished grad school in chemistry, but CIA positions are sort of set it and forget it since they can take so long. I’ve since been focused on a Patent Attorney track and am with a firm that will support me taking the patent bar/law school. If I get through processing and go to the CIA for some time, do you think would I be accepted back into patent law later on?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time
