Make a deliverable that stands on its own clearly stating reality and parachute out of the engagement.
You know that part of the job is advocating for the user or the human. And others may represent conflicting points of view. After all, if they already understood and valued human insight and user needs, they wouldn’t need to bring you in to help!
You shouldn’t go into corporate work expecting to win every round, but over time you should aim to hone your advocacy toolkit and improve your hit rate. You might use great storytelling, immersive experiences that affect stakeholders personally, quantitative data, arguments about avoiding the risk of failure or embarrassment, or good old fashioned political intrigue and networking to get a win. You stay motivated because you are always advocating for the human, and because you are always improving your ability to make the case compelling.
What clients do with your recommendations is on them. Focus on doing your bit well!
Research isn’t responsible for implementation.
That said, if you want to see your recommendations implemented, then work on your ability to make the research and recommendations more compelling. It’s all about storytelling and convincing others to fully buy in.
This is true - but often, under resourced end up looking to researchers for not just the insights but also the implementation approach. Never seen a firm (in the public sector) put their foot down and say “that’s out of scope”.
That’s a tough one. You can’t make decisions for clients, but you can provide a recommendation with a trade off analysis that includes the direction they are likely to go. Make sure it’s all in writing so they can’t point the finger at the consultant later if it blows up.
