I find it's really important to make the most of my time outside of work when I'm feeling burnt out like that. Do what you can to make time for the things you enjoy. Hobbies, spending time with family, exercise, whatever. Try your best to get enough sleep, too. Having things to look forward to after work can make getting through work slightly less painful.
Good advice, thank you! I feel like I’ve fallen into the trap of working late so I’m not prioritizing making real time for myself. And sleep too, I need to get better at that
Coffee when checking my bank account isn't enough to jolt me into being productive. It's a constant struggle. PTO is the only thing that helps me truly reset. I've got a vacation coming up next month myself and cannot wait for the time off.
second the PTO... and more than just a day or two. I try to give myself at least one long vacation once a year plus a few mini breaks. Even if its just a "staycation" in the summer when I can get some stuff done around the house and hang by the pool with my kids. Just time not thinking about work is helpful in staying energized.
I'm lucky in that most of my work I find pretty interesting. So even when I'm slammed with a lot of deadlines and I'm not feeling too motivated I can keep myself going just by getting into the subjects I'm dealing with. I think that's the key sometimes, though it seems counterintuitive, getting more deeper into the work instead of looking away can be helpful.
That sounds so nice! I’m in a weird place where my client load recently shifted so sadly, I’m no longer on accounts that I naturally find interesting. Been a real learning curve for sure!
When I’m bored I’ll calculate my salary down to the minute then to the second then start adding it up every second - usually good motivation
Hahaha oh man. I gotta try that!!
What helps me is sticking to routines. I set a timer for focus sprints and then take small breaks to reset. It’s not perfect, but it keeps me steady until I can fully recharge on vacation.
No that is key! I’ve really fallen off my routines this last month, and I know that is massively impacting my motivation (and probably even performance). A good reminder to get back on those!
Right out of school I made the mistake of chasing the promotion and next title so I could grow. But now that I'm ten years into my career I've realized that isn't really sustainable and caused some impact to WLB.
Now I stay motivated by putting my energy into projects that energize me. And make sure I put up some guardrails that help separate my work life from home life.
