How does anyone survive on a Paras pay? This is my 10th year and I got a 50 cent raise...starting in my area is 13.50, with the raise I make 14.60 an hour. I am currently the ONLY Para for our entire highschool. I have 2 associates degrees and one they will not count while the other is only worth a 20 cent raise. I work with these kids more than anyone. Im a widow with a teenage son. I cannot survive on this alone. I have 2 other jobs I work every day after school. It's all so depressing!

That is horrible! I think you should look at other school districts in your area. Paras at my school are our partners. They have contracts like the teachers do. They are paid on a scale based on education and experience. We all know that we could not do our jobs without para support. You deserve better. Don’t be afraid to look elsewhere!

I absolutely love working at our highschool and unfortunately it's a small enough area there's nothing else that pays any better. Not to mention as a Para I'm not employed legally thru the district. There is a middleman agency that is my legal employer. They are who decides pay and wether or not I get to keep my job every year. This middleman controls all of the Para positions with the exception of a few district spots but none of those are at the school I work at.

uplifting

Paras did not receive nearly enough compensation for the job they do.

It's heartbreaking to see how little teachers, substitute teachers, paraeducators, and assistant teachers are paid, despite the dedication and hard work they put in every day. How can we expect them to support their families on such low wages, while athletes earn millions?
In countries like Finland and other top-performing nations, teachers are respected and well-compensated for their critical role in shaping the future. I hope our leaders in the United States wake up and start recognizing the value of educators.
May change come soon!

Consider a private school or ABA therapy clinic. It's similar work and schedule; the pay starts around 20/hr.

I’m assuming I’m going to have to take a pay cut and start toward bottom of totem pole. Any recommendations/advice on roles to apply for since I’m new to the field? Would like to be in tech if possible in Charlotte, NC or remote.

I feel like I'm at my wits end. I teach self-contained classes and according to the ISBE website my classes shouldn't be more than 8 students unless I have an aide - then it can be 10. Is anybody else out there going through illegal class sizes for self-contained? How are you dealing? Maybe a vent session is in order.
