How does everyone handle managing their caseload and utilizing their paralegal(s)? I litigate primarily, with occasional small transactional projects that come up in the course of those files. It’s usually real estate related—drafting a purchase agreement, deed, etc. My firm is not one where we specialize so much that each case has the same process as every other case. So it often feels like I’m having to tackle something brand new in each and every case. (cont.)

(Cont.) I’m slowly refining my practice but it will continue to be moderately diverse for the foreseeable future. So this adds pressure on me and my paralegal to try and work out processes for a variety of different case types.

My paralegal is not detail oriented. She’ll miss obvious things in preparing documents that need to be corrected. Further, the variety in my practice has made it difficult for us to nail down a strict process. In an ideal world, I’d love to have her know what I’m thinking before I do and prepare all the documents I’m going to need before
I ask for it. I would never have to worry about whether her work was accurate or not. And I’d know she has all my deadlines and meetings and hearings and everything else calendared for me and will make sure I’m prepped and have the stuff for that event ready to go. As I’m explaining this, I realize I’m talking about an executive assistant who can prepare pleadings as well.

If I’m way out in left field for what I’d like to find, tell me. I know this is a lot to ask and I’m willing to work with her to train and develop these skills. But has anyone else found a way to accomplish this with a paralegal? If so, what have you done to outline the processes and expectations? What have you done to train that person? What did you do to make it work? And how much was dependent on just having the right person versus developing that person in the role you want to see them fill?

Additional Posts in Millennials in Law

Just graduated law school with honors but don’t have a job lined up. I’m thinking about just going solo and starting my own firm after taking the bar in Sept. Finances are not a problem. Planning to practice IP transactions/prosecution/litigation. I have work exp/clerk/extern but no associate exp. This climate is crazy and I think I can grab a lot of smaller work myself through my own networks and be my own boss. Also currently grabbing an mba part time. Thoughts? Advice?

Mexican attorney here - I am currently researching LLM programs (specifically M&A) and somehow paying USD$200K to study in the US doesn’t seem too appealing.

I hold a Spanish passport which may help with tuition fees in European Universities - do you recommend any European LLM programs or should I just bite the bullet and ask for a loan and pay the USD$150 - 200K?

Mentioning the programs is greatly appreciated.

So, I hate my job. For years I’ve been trying to work through nitty gritty and minutiae in the hopes that sorting out those details would “fix” my dissatisfaction. I’ve switched jobs a few times and dabbled in a few practice areas. But I’ve realized I just hate practicing law. Is there any reason to tell your boss or supervisor that you’re miserable? My assumption is no. They won’t fix things. So why would you? Any reason I should reconsider? (P.S. looking for an exit, but that’s not settled.)

I see so much room for growth in my firm, especially related to social media, updated technology, marketing strategies, etc. Except, every time I suggest them, I'm pegged as a greedy/pushy millennial. Told by the older partners, "back in our day" or "we tried that years ago" and am quickly dismissed. I referenced other firms initiatives and was told it was clear I was not happy where I am, so I should go... Anyone else struggling with this?
