Just have a conversation and bring it up. It's possible it's not that big a deal to the client, they're just doing it because they happen to. Some people don't really pay a lot of attention to the clock. If they have a reason to do it after 5, they can bring that up and you can try to figure something out. Some people will do things like that just to be purposely difficult, but it's best to proceed at first assuming that's not the case.
I need to really get better at not assuming the worst from the get-go. Thank you for this!
I’d set firm boundaries and offer alternative times upfront. Something like, I’m unavailable after 5 PM, but I’m happy to meet earlier in the day. Does [specific time] work for you? Most clients will respect it if you’re clear. Have you tried pushing back before?
I haven't - I'm always scared to push back because I have this misconception it looks poorly on me. I love your language though, thank you for the guidance.
You have a life after work, too. Don't neglect that. It's best to communicate your hours, so that they understand and adjust their time to yours. Or you can pick one or two days to take late calls. Again, communicate your schedule to your clients, and be firm about it.
Sometimes it feels like I’m the only one who has a life after work!
I once had a very controlling client who would drop off his bills at the end of the day, and expected me to stay to cut the checks, wait for his signature, and put postage on the envelopes so he could take them directly to the post office. My nanny could not stay late, so I politely asked the client to arrive earlier, and he agreed. It never hurts to ask.
That is extremely reassuring! Thank you for sharing.
