I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Staying put is a no brainer in this scenario
There are a lot of switching costs to consider when leaving, especially if you are perceived as a hipo / performer in your current role. Progression at Google is very difficult and slow. A ton of talented people get completely stuck at L5 and then even worse at L6.
It’s feasible but don’t expect it to be a 1 year thing. Probably 2-4 minimum.
Not even 2. Bar has been raised as budgets are cut
G isn’t offering you remote.
I wouldn’t take that, I’d wait for L6 and then move
Yeah I’m saying I personally wouldn’t move for only 10%.. ESPECIALLY with your standing and when promo is on the horizon if I’m not getting some elite benefit like being remote.
And add on to the fact that G has been having round after round of layoffs and probably have more planned in the future after they get very few bites on the voluntary exit offers
Is L5 to L6 that hard at Google now?

Yes. It’s the perfect storm of opportunity + scope + your performance. If even one of those isn’t there, it’s highly unlikely
