How granular are your time entries during trial?

Highest I have billed in a day was 22 hours. My time entry was just "trial"

likefunny

I try to add a bit of detail, partly as a record for myself. "Trial, including direct examination of ______ and cross of ________; prep for next day". I might note if I prepared a trial brief or did specific witness prep or had a charge conference etc. Not more than that though.

likesmart

yeah exactly this. any conferences with opposing counsel at night would be another. i’ve had certain clients (FAANG) reject “Trial” and redoing that from notes or memory just wasn’t worth not doing it upfront (but with much less granularity than you would for normal, just general big ticket items).

“Conduct trial day 16; confer with client re same; prepare for day 17.” I also cap at 16 hours. I habitually work more than that but on principle I know I’m not nearly as effective in hour 17 than I am in hour 5. That’s a personal choice, however.

More great advice from T1 - don’t bill your time! Annual review? Bonus? Ethical billing? What are those?

My aunt recently passed away, leaving behind 2 young girls (16 and 12 years old). I’m trying my best to be there for them and pray for them, and have been asking people to pray for them as well. Until I started question what is the point of asking people to pray for them? I know God hears my prayers, so why do we ask people to pray ?

I’ve interviewed for several positions AVP and VP roles since October of ‘21 internally with Citi. Didn’t take any of them because it would have been only $8k - $11k salary bumps. For double or even triple the work. So I’m leaving to go from $70k to $235k in September at a competing firm for a VP level role. The moral of the story: hop if you need to. No reason to stick around for low pay and not being compensated fairly by the company that expects “loyalty” from you.
