It ain’t easy. I know a handful of very impressive SM’s who are having trouble entering the partnership
My Senior Manager had the best sales figures in Florida and the southwest region 5 years in a row and couldn’t make it to partner at my current firm due to politics he said. He didn’t have the “it” factor the firm looks for in partners and so he left to another firm. He jumped into a partner role at another firm (lower tier)

D4 how do you figure out important partners?
3-5 years. Lot of presentations. Need sales numbers and support from a number of partners/mds.
You may also (will probably) be forced into the MD (non equity) track which is much less lucrative. 2-tiered partnership is the way of the future, which is happening now in partnerships in consulting and other industries like law and IB. Imo it’s not worth it to be at the mercy of the existing partners for years just for an almost zero chance of becoming an equity partner. They don’t want to admit new partners because it dilutes their equity.
Thanks all!! Is there a clear communication that you are on track or not? Assuming it varies by practice areas but can someone comment on how things are on the consulting side? Also, is it different for someone new coming in a SM role?
