If that’s the career path you want, go to grad school. Get a 4.0 and only put your grad gpa on your resume. Pass a couple cpas. Should get you in the door for risk assurance/IT Audit. I had a 3.2 and did that - 13 year career at a big 4 with a pipeline to partner. You got this.
Graduated undergrad with 2.5, and got my masters with a 3.9. Got in with a smaller regional firm. Now making over 6 figures as a manager.
Building a good relationship through networking is the best way you will overcome your bad GPA. Also, the firms at the bottom of the top 10 get a lot of their intern offers rejected, so you can get in if you time your app right.
Dude you need to start over your degree or something
How come you are still allowed to have a major in accounting with 1.8 GPA? As I remember, there is GPA requirement for certain majors, such as 3.0 or 2.5. You can’t below than that.
Must depend on the school
literally take any accounting job out of college. Private or small. Don’t put GPA on your resume. Get your CPA. Apply to public as an experienced staff. They wont look
This is good advice
Sorry to say this, but I would never look at your resume. Do you have some amazing work experience where you were putting yourself throigh school while caring for a sick parent or something? Other than starting in a small firm or private, I can't see anyone actively recruiting you. Sorry, but just being honest. Try a regional firm and build your resume up. A few years in, no one will care about your GPA.
Pay up for Becker with your student discount and pass those exams. Without relevant work experience GPA will always be a factor.
Have you considered that maybe accounting isn’t for you?
Pass the four cpa exams - your life will do a 180
Pretty hopeless to be honest. We wouldn’t even interview. Far too many much more qualified candidates. We start questioning fit and whether to bother interviewing around 3.75
You are leaving a huge amount of potential on the table with that standard.
Don’t listen to the people saying they wouldn’t even look at your resume or you need to change majors. I know a lot of terrible accountants who had great GPAs. You may not get a job at a prestigious firm starting out, but you’ll be able to get an entry level at a smaller firm if you interview well.
Work hard, parlay that job into a bigger role somewhere else, and you’ll be on track to do whatever you want to with your career. Stick with it if this is what you want to do.
I graduated with a 2.5 in spring and I have a job, just apply don’t have gpa on resume and be good at interviews. As long as you know your stuff they will hire you. I got hired over someone with a 4.0 because I knew how to use excel pretty well. Job requirement was 3.0 minimum and proficient in excel. They tested me at the interview with my excel skills and asked me about my gpa. I was honest told them I got a 2.5, but the guy that had the 4.0 lied about his excel skills, so I got the job.
Also I had no accounting experience, but had worked many different jobs even throughout school. I do recommend trying to get a little experience though because it will help. Some people excel in the workplace and not at school.
I rather hire someone with good work ethic and the ability to use technology with that MIS degree. A lot of new hires are coming in without any self-initiative. Who cares about your GPA, don’t let everyone in here bring you down, just go interview. I’ve worked with a lot of 4.0 people who end up being low performers
I’m surprised your school let you go on that way. At ours they don’t let you stay in the program unless you’re passing…
Start small, build your network and then apply to B4.
Scares you
Every employer I’ve had said they didn’t care about GPA. They just care that you’re a good employee. Also agree with previous comment about passing the CPA exam; having CPA behind your name will make you more valuable to any firm, you’ll be paid more, and promoted quicker than others that don’t have their CPA. From what I’ve seen, it’s easier to pass the CPA exam after getting your master’s.
Get a masters degree and get a 3.0
Take some community college classes to get to 150 and pump that GPA up!
I think if you have your masters they won’t ask about gpa, study for the cpa exam and apply at smaller firms and then after a year of experience you can move up to a bigger firm if you want.
I know you’re down on yourself but I do want to let you know that your GPA doesn’t define you IF you are smart but have a bad GPA due to not having your priorities straight or other factors. I had a low GPA but I have common sense and critical thinking skills & I performed just as well as my other team members as a staff, if not better. College taught you HOW to learn, your career is applying that. Be confident in yourself & do not let imposter syndrome get to you. Don’t overthink assignments. Do your best, submit them on time, be open to feedback, and have a good attitude and you’ll excel. Good luck!
2.1 is pretty tough. Do what you can to get to even 2.5 and you’ll have at least some chance.
I graduated with 2.8, worked at a small firm and then took a job with a regional firm. GPA doesn’t matter at all after the first job, but you gotta get that first job.
