How hopeless is my low GPA situation? Soon to be graduating next spring with a double major (Accounting and MIS) but with an abyssmal GPA (2.1 overall, 1.8 Accouting, and 2.5 MIS) hoping to become a CPA in the future. I'm starting to look for internships now and almost everywhere I look says a 3.0 is required or heavily preferred. Are there any other avenues to finding an internship or even employment after graduation in accounting?

If that’s the career path you want, go to grad school. Get a 4.0 and only put your grad gpa on your resume. Pass a couple cpas. Should get you in the door for risk assurance/IT Audit. I had a 3.2 and did that - 13 year career at a big 4 with a pipeline to partner. You got this.

Graduated undergrad with 2.5, and got my masters with a 3.9. Got in with a smaller regional firm. Now making over 6 figures as a manager.

Building a good relationship through networking is the best way you will overcome your bad GPA. Also, the firms at the bottom of the top 10 get a lot of their intern offers rejected, so you can get in if you time your app right.

I just hired two people and GPA didn’t come up. There are so many more important factors.

It’s a bold move cotton

Brother finally managed to pull his GPA about two or three semesters before graduating to a 3.1
Zero experience, not even flipping burgers, and found a job as AP Clerk. I agree with the CPA though. After a few years, nobody will ask about your GPA anymore.

Honestly, nobody ever asked me for mine either. I just kept applying. Maybe try a local CPA firm?

like

network, or start small at a local public firm, work two years, switch to a bigger firm, and keep going til you get to the firm you want? honestly not difficult bc on the way, you'll probably get enough experience for the CPA exam. once you nail the exam, no one cares about your GPA from x years ago.

good luck!

Grad school and/or also get an accounting job somewhere small for the experience. Don't list your gpa, but dont lie about it. Boast the double major and why you think it's special. How is that unique and what skill do you offer to them? You might not land a big 4 but you can get regional and move to bigger and better things.

I had three internships during undergrad but they weren’t at any big firms so GPA wasn’t a consideration. If you are still in school ask some professors if they have any leads for internships, preferably the ones you had good grades in their class. I got one of my internships this way, the other two I basically cold called places and sent out emails so there wasn’t competition. They just liked my initiative.

From what I remember when I graduated the GPA really only matter for that first job in most cases, especially at big firms/corporations. My first job was state government. You might have target small companies or rely heavily on your network.

I know there are some recent grad jobs with federal government but I’m pretty sure GPA is considered.

If you can get your CPA then GPA may not matter as much.

Your best bet is utilizing your connections for internships since your academics don’t represent well. For after graduation, show you can pass a few (or all) the CPA exams and your GPA won’t matter at all

I was offered by PwC with a 2.8. 2.1 is rough, but if you can network well and do decent in grad school you shouldn’t have a problem.

Did you go to a well known rough undergrad maybe even a big ten school ? Just curious
Are you at 150?

In the event you have 150 college credit hours go for your CPA . I’ll echo other comments of use becker
In the event you’re not at 150 but went to a good undergrad try for a reputable masters program or even community college .

Finally if this gpa is from a small school for profit school not well known program. Seriously consider if this is the career you want. Working in accounting even within industry is a learning curve and public accounting even small firms is a steep learning curve. Lots of jobs careers out there you need to determine is this for you

I couldn’t get internships due to 2.8 general but 3.8 major. Maybe use your major. Others transfer to other schools (GPA doesn’t transfer, credits do) but you might lose credits and waste time and money; but you might have a second chance; or get into grad school and get a good GPA

RIP

Definitely don’t let your GPA get in the way! Apply for internships anyway & they may go ahead & give you an offer afterward!!

If you’re a member of (or say you’re a member of) an underrepresented group you’ll be fine

I got my job with a 3.1 overall, and a 2.5 accounting. I worked full time and took full time classes and that’s why my GPA took a hit couldn’t do it all. RSM didn’t ask about it but I know they care a little bit. If I were in your shoes I’d apply everywhere, do research on how to nail interviews, ask for help on your resume by anyone you know who works in accounting. Try to do make up for your GPA by having a great personality. Good luck!

I was in a similar situation. 2.5 gpa, 2.6 in my specialized coursework (not an accounting major). I started as an AR specialist/staff accountant at a medium sized company and did that for two years. I then got hired on at a regional accounting/advisory/consulting firm as a staff. I’ve been here for a year and a half and have been promoted to senior and am actively working towards manager. It’s possible to make a good living outside of big 4.

Don’t put your GPA on your resume and apply to as many places as possible. Do practice interviews and go in super confident. Know your strong skills and steer the conversation that way. There’s fewer accounting graduates than there used to be but more work so lots of public and private companies need staff. Take whatever you can get bc after you have your first job and are no longer a campus hire nobody asks about GPA. May have hurt your chances to get to Big 4 and maximize your earning potential from the start but just accept you’ll have to work a little longer/harder to get up there, but with the right career moves and focus you can still eventually have a great career.

GPA is not everything.

If you get your CPA, companies won’t mind/look at your gpa.

I am considering staying at the firm but trying to get trial experience through side Pro Bono work. Thoughts?
