knowing someone at the company is pretty important. Employee referrals are a huge help—but it doesn’t always matter whether the employee is on the team itself.
Microsoft and Apple: Hire based on team, so it’s best to find someone in the actual org or on the team
Google: Hires centrally for most roles below L6 (Senior EM/AP level hiring), so any Google referral will do
Facebook: Unsure, but I think it’s similar to Google from what I’ve heard?
Amazon and Netflix: No clue at all
If you are looking for a specific team within google (healthcare, retail, life sciences, etc) it's more helpful to know someone on that team. When the general applications go out and if that team doesn't have openings it's hard to move forward with a general referral (even if that referral is a SWE)
I’ve interviewed with Google and Amazon 2x. Once for product management and once for program management. Not sure what it is maybe I’m not cut out, but i have my resume posted everywhere and have recruiters reach out to me directly.
Do you have a tech background? I’ve had referrals and no luck with interviews

I got a Google S&O interview by just applying online no referral. Somebody from Facebook actually reached out to me for an ops role through LinkedIn. I also got an Apple strategy interview by just applying online.
Rejections from all though lel
Same
I got reached out by recruiter via linkedin message (google, paypal, and facebook), got offer with google. Didnt apply anywhere.
Which domain?
I beg you, if there is a “contact” listed on a posting, do not reach out to network with that person. The last role I hired, I got about 50 messages a week from people who figured out I was the hiring manager and wanted to “talk and network.” No. You’re applying for a job. Apply, and let me do my job. I had two people google me and call my f*ing personal cell to “tell me why they were a great fit.”
Not saying you were going to do that - but the comment about “finding the person to network with” based on the job description” made me want to say this. You’re not helping your case but doing that, only hurting it. If you know someone on my team or we have a second degree connection and they reach out on your behalf, that’s different... but I’m already busy. All hiring managers are. We don’t want unsolicited “networking” messages from people we have no connection to.
If your background and cover letter are good it will. Plenty of folks here have applied to tech jobs cold and gotten interviews - at least from what I see.
No referral, just apply online with a McKinsey resume

Somehow didn’t get a single interview for any of the roles I applied to with a referral but ended up landing an offer at a tech unicorn that I applied through LinkedIn lol
Applied to Google online and got call back
OP
How many rounds of interviews are you having ?
And any tips / advice for the interviews ?
I got a call back from Amazon by simply applying to a position online last week. Was not expecting to be picked up by their recruiter. Went through the HR sceening early today and will be speaking to one of their hiring managers next week. If all goes well, will go thought their loop interviews in the incoming weeks and we will see where it leads. Now I need to do some research and get some insights by early next week. I am pretty sure we have alum went though their interview process, secured the offer and made the switched in the last few years. I am looking to have a quick chat / informantional interview. Appreciate your time. Feel free to message me.
That’s great, all the best. How many years of experience do you have, and how technical have your consulting projects been?
How many YOE yall have??
I applied to Amazon through Hired.com and now I work there so no networking required
Seems like this is for technical roles. Have any advice for non-technical roles?

I was recently referred for a FB financial services risk management job (yesterday). We will see if I get an interview.
Interesting - does Facebook do financial services now?
I have only applied online and I hear back from 2 out of 3 companies. Interview coming up.
