You work in advertising. You do not now, nor have you ever had “job security.”
If the tech company you’re looking at has solid rev, solid product, and is/will be profitable next quarter, then take the leap. If the tech company is one of those ones we all wonder how they actually make money … maybe look at other companies.
Honestly, I’m hesitant to jump ship now in this volatile atmosphere. I’m torn. The salary increase is tempting but the “last in, first out” element scares me. Could be total bs tho, idk.
Very well said @MD1! I’ve seen first in, first out because they were an underperformer. Doesn’t make sense to get rid of your best based on how long they’ve been there. Especially during a downturn. You want good people that can handle more than their share.
It’s hard to say without knowing another persons specific circumstances but we can’t predict the future. You could end up safer in tech than advertising, we just don’t know how it will all shake out. So my personal opinion is to go for it and take the opportunity. And worst case, you could always pivot back.
But to add, echoing what McCann said above about the kind of tech company. That is an excellent point.
Confused that this question keeps coming up. Isn't your current job just as likely to layoff? I'm interviewing and I'll move if it feels right. This is not the first time and tbh can't live worried about what could.
From what I’m seeing, tech layoffs started happening months ago. Agency layoffs seem to just be starting (someone posted about RGA today). But all of it really depends on the company, clients and management. Agency side, are they running lean or bloated? Can you/will you work on any type of production? Can you handle more jobs than your fellow Producers? Are your clients “recession proof” (I.e. beer is better than cars)? Not sure as much for the tech side questions to ask.
Same way I have my entire working life - knowing I can be shown the door at any moment so I save and hope for the best.
Control what you can. Does a looming recession have me reconsidering some opportunities coming my way? Absolutely. I work on a pretty (knocks on wood) recession proof client in-house, so I’d probably pass on an opportunity to work on, say, a luxury item at an agency.
You’re going to need to be specific with the tech company if you want a helpful response. There’s a difference between Google and Zillow.
As a general rule, tech is more stable than an agency.
Honestly, in this economy I don’t know what to expect. I guess whether would depend on the company you’re looking to join and it’s reputation.
