How legit are Chambers rankings?

Very. It’s basically the opposite of vault.

like

CLO1: Exactly, when I need local counsel, I look at Chambers and the rankings for our own practice are correct.

like

The most legit of the rankings, but still has its faults. Takes forever to get on and once on it’s incredibly difficult to drop off or down bands (even if warranted).

like

L1 - right. Forgot to mention that aspect, though the real challenge is getting them to respond to the outreach. Anecdotally, even longtime / loyal / satisfied clients have a low response rate. The partners willing to do a bit of chasing on this front, when appropriate, tend to also do well in the rankings.

like

Very but can be outdated. Still the best public resource by a lot.

like

About as legit as they come.

Probably by far the best rankings that we have in the legal profession (for law firms at least). Legal500 is OK, Vault is generally terrible but the top of their rankings in each category is fairly good at capturing general practice area prestige (but once you get past like the top 1-3 firms, it’s just a shit show). Think it’s been said a million times but the overall v100 rankings are useless other than a general guide towards which firms generally have strong reputations. You get random stuff like Milbank jumping from v40 to the cusp of v10 for raising associate salaries.

Are initial law firm consultations usually free? I’m on H1B and wanted to schedule an initial consultation with an immigration lawyer to discuss some GC options (outside of employment based) and was told I’d have to pay $200 for a consultation (45 mins session).

Am I being cheap for not wanting to pay that or are there firms out there that offer free consultations?

About to finish my first year. I’m a specialist. Only going to hit 65% of my hours (took a 4 week vacation cause of wedding/hm).

I never say no to work and i have fantastic reviews, and the head of my practice (with whom I work a lot for) has great things to say about me.

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.

Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day
-I want to drink less alcohol, so my goal is to become the type of person who drinks occasionally

Neither of these feel that helpful. Any one have suggestions for other identity-based goals that get at these changes I want to make?

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing. Thanks in advance!

Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.
