How legit are chambers rankings for partners?

It's legit as it can be because it's based on deals the attorney is leading and the references they provide to backup their experiences and reputation.

Keep in mind that you could be a superstar attorney, but if you're not well received at your firm, they're not going to put you down for a chambers nomination.

Yes. Google chambers submissions process. You need upwards of 20 high quality references to give you glowing reviews. Many top firms have a team that puts many hours into the submissions.

like

Pretty legit. I think the only issue is that it has a lot of inertia, so once you're on it's hard to get knocked off, even if you really ain't doing much practice-wise and are coasting off your rep.

Chambers and Legal 500 are the closest you’ll get to legitimate rankings of attorneys.

As far as I can tell, Chambers is the only prestige marker that people actually respect.

I’m a chambers ranked partner for 5 years so take this with a grain of salt but here is my experience. In my practice area, it’s recognized as a good benchmark for who is a leader in our space. I was nominated originally by my firm but had great client reviews (a handful at the time - definitely not 20) and then other people - generally partners - at other firms spoke highly of me in their reviews. Getting ranked is IMO a good goal to have professionally; it’s nice to be recognized for your contributions in the area in which you practice and your skills. Happy to answer any questions.

Do these superstars usually hold Managing partner title? I was surprised none of the partners in my office are ranked.

No. They just have to have a lot of experience and recognition as well as clients who will go to bat for them. Chambers mostly gets it right in major practice areas while niche areas can be gamed a bit more. Maybe your firm doesn’t make submissions or makes poor submissions (a firm I worked at had an absurd process for lining up sterling references and preparing submissions).

Chambers historically has trailed reality (keeping semi-retired folks at the top of rankings and being slow to add breakout stars) but they’re trying to correct for that a bit now when they interview people in the relevant field.

My work quality is slipping due to brain fog and mental health issues and I don’t know how to address it with my firm or who to go to. I was considered one of the best associates in our practice group, but now it can take me 3-4x the time to write an average brief. I can’t seem to think and organize my thoughts any more. This is incredibly scary bc obvi, that’s what this job is all about. I’m in IP litigation at a V50 firm and a mom. Do I raise it with partners and how?

2d year lit associate at Amlaw 100 here.

Could someone elaborate on the truism that most people in my position won't be at the firm after a few years?

If I do good work, am well liked, and don't lateral or leave myself, what sort of things might cause me to be shown the door? If the reason is partnership, when do I/those around me start truly deciding whether or not I'm partner track?

Noting that I like my firm a lot--what's the expected outcome here?

Thanks!

Junior Associates - How much student loan debt are you and your peers in these days? A few young partners and counsel at my firm were discussing the student loan moratorium and most of us were convinced we could have paid the majority of our loans off with the bonuses associates got these last two years. But we are all old and when we graduated 150k to 200k was about the max student loan debt people graduated with. So educate me. What is the average student loan debt these days?
