Almost nobody is shown the door. Everybody leaves.

This is definitely true the farther up you go in the rankings.

From what I've seen, most people either leave for something they see as a better opportunity or because their work product is questionable and they run out of partners who are willing to give them work. Some will leave because they sense that the firm's needs do not align with their practice so they are unlikely to be made partner. Assuming you are happy and the partners are happy with your work, the main concern is whether you can fill a need that the firm has, which usually means developing some sort of specialty or focus.

Very few people are told to leave in the first few years. And none of the people who are told to leave are told because of partnership prospects. Many people start only expecting to stay a few years, pay off debt, and do something else (smaller firm, in house, government, non profit, teach, etc). Others wanted to stay but realize the job can be simply awful and don’t want biglaw. Still others just leave to go to another biglaw firm. Whatever the reason, a very large percentage of biglaw associates leave their first firm within the first 3 years or so.

It’s really just about it being a grind (lots of unpredictable hours with very high expectations) as opposed to people being pushed out. Many people justifiably opt for less demanding paths. One of the only careers I like to compare biglaw to is the NFL. Highly lucrative, but highly demanding/rough with a generally short career span.
Yes, biglaw is just like playing for the NFL
Maybe I’m misunderstanding the purpose of your question, but what people are referring to is likely the massive amounts of associates who will voluntarily quit your firm to go to a better firm/one with a better salary and ✨balance✨. Law firms your size generally take FOREVER to fire people, even ones who are underperforming. The number one reason you would be asked to leave and/or not make partner is, whether you are trying your hardest to get hours or not, that you repeatedly don’t hit hours. But even then, they will keep you on for likely at least a year or two, but things will get tense as other associates work longer hours and question why some people have it “easier” (not much you can do to avoid this, just being honest). Get sources of work from multiple partners so that you have a full plate most of the time, and collect great reviews from as many people as possible.

Yeah they leave for a few thousand. Because if you’re going to be worked this hard, and it is grueling working this hard for this long, you want to sell your life for the market price.
Don’t work biglaw hours if you’re not getting biglaw pay. Most of the people who leave decide even the biglaw pay isn’t worth it anymore. I know someone who was all but promised partnership who left this year to go in house because it was just too much.
You’ll understand. Give it a few years. Even the gunners who love this life understand it.
