Until the strong exist opportunity appears
Coach
Came here to say this.
How else can this question be answered?
I think what OP wants to know what is the right time to switch.
So either you retire as a partner and remain here for lifetime if you are meant to be a consultant and if not, 1st yr manager is a sweet spot to transition to industry. By that time you would have led some significant projects/client work and mastered some skills that you will get great exit opportunities. Leaving too early sometimes is just jumping ship because there is a better opportunity but you have mostly been only in support roles. You want to avoid getting into the SM grind if you are not made to be or does not want to be a partner. Also as SM, exit opportunities become slim having to compromise on pay or type of work.
Caveat that this would apply in most situations but not true every time. Sometimes you may get good learning opps very early on and can exit and sometimes the SM grind can provide a springboard into some really sweet exec positions.
I would recommend making manager at D. You learn a lot in the process and also mature professionally. You will then move with some significant learnings and also get some cool exit opportunities. Good luck!
It’s really about where you want to go in your long term career as I’ve understood it. I’m at 1 YOE and I’m jumping from complaince consulting to an industry role in analytics because I feel that the industry role is going to put me on a better career trajectory and my consulting role is pretty much irrelevant to what I want to do long term. I also got a promotion so that’s nice too.
It should also be noted that I do not like consulting
