How many hours do you need to bill for you to consider it a crazy month? I realize this is practice area (and even firm) dependent but wanted to check what others think. At my firm, they consider 180+ hours to be a crazy month.

I think 200+ of honest billing is a crazy month. If I bill over 200 hours, it means I did very little that month outside of commuting/working/eating/sleeping. The more you go above 200, the more it just cuts into sleep.

like

200hr would be “busy”; beyond 240 might be “crazy”. 160-200 is typical. Big law.

like

150 is considered crazy around here but it's a lifestyle firm

Hire me?

200+ is considered “at capacity.” 230+ we start getting into “crazy” territory.

like

185-200: standard month
200-215: busy month
215-230: very busy month
230-245: crazy busy month
245+: insane month and/or padding

like

350-380 will get you a call from the partner and HR, not too much below that keeps you on a solid partner track. As long as your hours aren’t getting written off.

What firm

I'd say 225+

like

150 and below - slow or on vacation
165 - 170 - solid month
170 - 180 - busy
180 - 190 - very busy
190+ - truly at capacity. If multiple months in a row, I’m over capacity.

Midlaw with 1800 hour requirement. Rarely work weekends.

like

A7 - correct. Also, 1,800 is low nowadays. Not saying it’s right, just the reality

308.

As a first year, I had partners express concern when I hit 300. And it was a true 300—tons of doc review and a very tight discovery window.

190

200+ for me personally. At the end of those months, I notice I am very tired and ready for a break.

I have a coworker who keeps spouting comparative odds and situations in regards to the safety of the vaccine. Such as: you're twice as likely to get hit by lightening than have blod clots from JJ. It's very annoying and I find it to be really inapprorpriate, maybe because it's pushy or just I find these comparative things to be a bit irrelevant. How does one handle something like that? Can you shut the person down without starting a spat?

I explain the salary is dependent on the market data for them in Canada, WHERE THEY LIVE, and you can’t compare it to the US employees and the market data down here. Overall they are both in the 75th% for total comp. for their industry. Am I wrong?

When drafting a brief or other submissions for court or arbitration, do you use words such as clearly, erroneously, etc. to emphasize certain points? Our managing partner says that we should, but all of the writing guides for litigators that I've read repeats the mantra "show, don't tell" and explain that most judges dread such words.

I know that the politically correct thing to do here is to do whatever the managing partner wants me to do, but I just wanted to ask for other ppl's opinion.

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.

I am an associate at an AM200 firm and was (IMO) very clear prior to accepting this role that I value work-life balance and wanted to try to keep work at night on the weekends to a minimal, but since February, it seems like it’s always something that requires my time as needed disregarding “business hours” or my personal schedule. Thoughts on whether to bring this up or continue to be a team player until I burn out and pay off my student loans?
