I’m with you. All of our extra money goes to daycare and childcare related costs. In the city it’s so expensive. I put away $100 a month in 529. 6-8% in 401k. And figure once the kids are all in public school and care costs are significantly reduced we ca shift gears. I keep telling myself it’s a temporary necessary phase and we’ll get through it.
This is encouraging. I’m literally going to screenshot this and repeat it as a family mantra for the next 5 years.
8% in 401K ... doesn’t feel like it’s enough but hard to put more at this point in time
This is me. You’re making me feel better. My kids 529 has like $1000, so if they go to college maybe they can buy a book or two.
Not enough, OP. Not enough.
I’m hoping that once my kids are out of daycare I can invest more. But one just started K and there are so many additional expenses that I don’t feel like I’m really saving.
Summer camp is beyond brutal. And sports and music and field trips and a computer for school and a special calculator for math and then they grow into adult size shoes and the sneakers that were $40 are now $80. Same for clothes and coats. And then mote for the coat after they lose theirs and the sneakers after they lose those...
I've resigned myself to never having enough for college or retirement saved. The math doesn't add up over the long term. Not at our income with 2 kids.
Where is this investment bowl?!
There is a personal investment bowl
So I’m squeezing as tight as I can right now while she’s in FT daycare in hopes that 529 will have more time to compound, and if we have a different situation or more expenses as she gets older we can scale back. Doing about $800/mo in 529. - I figure daycare + monthly 529 is about = future private school, so trying to get used to living on less. And taking comfort that if we decide to cut back at work or go to public school, we’ve got a good head start on college and maybe don’t have to squeeze as hard later
Any extra cash (bonus, tax refund) went to 529. I think we got it to 30k in 10 years ish before circumstances changed. Did 401k to get the match as a minimum: maxed it when flush, cut back when not flush.
why do parents feel obligated to cover 100% of college at expensive private colleges? cut yourselves a break and teach your kids responsibility early! two birds one stone
all good reasons for you. my tuition wasnt covered and im doing just fine
