How much does remote flexibility actually factor into your job decisions these days? I didn’t think it would matter that much, until last week, when I had to go into the office every day for the first time in years. By midweek, I was already questioning how I ever did it before. The commute, the constant chatter, the “got a minute?” interruptions… it’s a whole different kind of exhaustion. Curious if others feel the same way, or if in-office life still holds some appeal for you?

Pretty significantly. I have been fully remote since the start of the pandemic, and I can't imagine ever going back to the office. My introverted self is thriving being able to work from home. I am a lot more productive, and I still have social battery left for my personal life at the end of the day.

like

Wow, that’s really impressive! I wish more companies trusted their employees to be just as productive, if not more so, when working from home.

Fully. I would literally NEVER again go into the office full time. If I worked somewhere hybrid and they forced me back I would quit :D I love my routine so much, and love the hybrid style. I also don't get paid enough to be spending all my money on petrol :D

like

Right?! The thought of commuting every day again makes me tired already 😆

I hate commuting to work. I only have to go in two days a week right now but I cannot go back to five days a week. I would prefer to be fully remote but those roles seem few and far between.

like

Me too! It’s hard to go back after you’ve had a taste of that flexibility. The good news is hybrid’s still the dominant setup, at least for now.

100%. I’d need about a 50% raise to even consider a full time in person role. It’s one of the biggest considerations for me. I may miss out on good opportunities, but I’m okay with that.

like

I hear you completely. It’s crazy how much more you have to be offered these days to make full-time onsite work worth it. Definitely tough balancing opportunities with what really works for you.

We’re now fully back in the office. Would definitely love to go back to a hybrid model. That being said, the one thing I do like is having that separation again. Although I definitely got more done remotely than I do in the office.

like

I totally get that. It’s nice having that separation again, but fully onsite can be tough. The daily commute and constant office distractions can really wear people down.

like

It’s a factor but in the opposite. I would be less likely to take a job the more it required working remote.

like

That’s interesting! For you, remote work is actually a downside. I guess everyone’s got their own sweet spot when it comes to work style. Curious what is it about remote work that puts you off?

Yeah, get used to it… it’s becoming the norm, and most roles are hybrid at best…

It is a key factor

I've never cared to work remotely or in office. However, the way it's so hard to find even a hotel job right now, I don't think it should matter to anyone. Unless, they have a disability.

That’s a fair point. With the job market the way it is, sometimes flexibility just isn’t an option. Totally get where you’re coming from.

How do y’all deal with people at work who are stuck on stupid? Like they have no idea what they’re talking about and they REFUSE to learn. It’s like they have a god complex or something even with proof, maybe bc of their tenure at the company? Even if there’s valid data backing up that they’re wrong. Maybe it’s bc I’m a type 8 enneagram, but it frustrates the hell out of me!
So any advice would be lovely :)

Me: If I'm taking on more responsibilities, would my compensation be able to reflect that increase?
Employer: It's tight this year. Economy/pandemic etc.
Me: I'm leaving.
Employer: *surprised pikachu face*

My current company and many others I know about do not offer the mobility to do so until much later, which is not what I want. Thank you.
