How much money do you spend per month on food (groceries and eating out)?

Recently moved in with my girlfriend and feel like I’m constantly swiping my card 🙄. Here’s ours below:

- Groceries: $300/month
- Dining: $400/ month

My wife and I had a good month last month. We spent $1,000 between eating out and groceries. We usually spend >$1,200

like

Sounds about right....

We spend around $600 (about ~$150 per week for two of us) on groceries and probably another $800-$1000 on average eating out. Going out to a nice Friday night dinner is our “thing,” so we don’t mind splurging. And healthy groceries are so expensive compared to other things 🤯. I guess it doesn’t help we have all of our groceries delivered. My SO and I are both comfortable with how much we spend though (and contribute equally), so it’s definitely important to be on the same page.

like

Agreed. My groceries for two are about the same. Eating out is cheaper, but we don’t drink much when out for dinner.

I go to pick up a bag of chips and hummus and eggs and it costs me $120. Have no idea how people are only spending a few hundred bucks a month on groceries.

likefunny

Those saying they spend $300-400 per month, how many people are you feeding? It’s 3 of us and I can’t seem to leave the grocery store without spending $250-300 per shop

like

Family of 4 plus au pair- spend around $1200/month on groceries but we pretty much never eat out

For 2 people living in Austin:

Groceries = $900 per month
Dining out = about $1100 per month (including alcohol when we go out)

like

Is Austin that expensive?

🤯😱😬 Feel like I will starve, physically and socially, with that budget in NYC

$100-200 a month on groceries and $100-200 a month on eating out for my husband and I.

like

$500 month for a family of four. Eating out is about $125 month. I feel like that is too much.

I just did the math for last month and we spent over $1500 between groceries, restaurants, and food delivery 💀💀💀

like

I d say we are closer to 2k for that. But my husband and also has a big appetite and we love ordering different kinds of food

That’s a lot of eating out. Make sure you’re not doing it out of boredom or a need to ‘do something’

likehelpful

I don’t think that’s a lot. Groceries look lower than me and I cook a lot but eat good quality foods. $100 / week for dining out for 2 is very reasonable. What’s the point of working so hard if you can’t have a few meals at a decent to nice place?

like

When my husband and I were younger and didn’t have kids, we easily spent 1500/month eating out and another 100–300 on groceries and that was with Deloitte paying for most of my week day meals. We love going to fancy restaurants and drinking nice wine. Now with kids it’s probably 1000/month on groceries and 1000/month eating out.

like

Doesn’t seem excessive to me. I cook at home during the week and I’ll order delivery 1-2 times on weekends. The minimum cost per delivery is $20-25. So as a single person I don’t think eating out 1-2 times a week is alot but this still adds up to roughly $200 a month.

like

In hcol city (LA) and we spend ~$600 on groceries and another $400 on dining out for two people. We like to buy from farmers markets so are okay with the level we’re spending. Seems like you’re doing good!

like

Wife and I spend roughly 1300-1600 a month.

like

Skip breakfast
$10 for lunch out a few times a week
$50 a week for groceries (usually just a few pieces of fruit, veg, cheese, snacks, sandwich stuff, beer)
$100 for meat, fish and frozen veg once a month from costco
$100 dinner drinks out once a week
$40 take out dinner once or twice a week

So let’s say

$10x3x4.33 = $133
$50x4.33 = $216.5
$100
$100x4.33 = $433
$40x2x4.33 = $346

So I’m at around $1200. Seems like a lot doesn’t it :)

like

Yup and I realized that I didn’t include dates in this.. as it’s been so long :)

Here east coast, (cause I know expenses vary from country to country and even between states ) we spend about $400 month on groceries and $100 on takeout/restaurant. We are very frugal and don’t go out to eat much or order out much. And personally I feel better eating my own cooked meals vs all the extra salts and fats from restaurant food.

like

That’s about on par with my partner and I. You could probably cut down on eating out by $100 if you needed to.

For groceries, I buy beef, chicken and pork chops in bulk and freeze them so I’m not buying them every week. Buying in bulk makes it cheaper (I think). I have the app for the grocery store I frequent so each week I’ll see what they’re offering discounts on. I also shop at a discount grocery store (Grocery Outlet if you have one near you) for the basics, organics or when I have time to go to 2 stores. We don’t buy any type of snacks. Pasta is a good thing to make that’s cheap and can last you multiple meals. I just chop up some veggies and cook them in an olive oil & pasta water sauce or get a jar of red sauce and mix in a lb of cooked ground beef or sausage.

like

1000+ on groceries and maybe 400 on eating out

like

Yeah, I spend about 800-1000 by myself a month (food, groceries, alcohol), but I go on dates a lot. I wouldn’t read too much into it though if you’re hitting all your financial goals. If you aren’t, eating out should be first place to cut.

like

400$ a month at Costco for two people.
400$ a month eating out for two people.
$200$ every quarter at Total Wine.

like

You just need to find a friend or family member that buys too much at Costco. Everybody knows this person. They will unload excess groceries on you.

like

Have definitely seen this happen…

If your friends are also into cooking, this is also a great excuse for the group to get together for a really nice dinner or bbq. We do this often especially when someone needs to make room in the freezer—prime ribeye caps, brisket, and porchetta!

Just wanted to brag a little. This may not be much for some but I’m super excited. I graduated with a B.A in chemistry July 2022 and I start my job this Monday with a salary of 60K! This is the most money I’ve ever made 😱😱. Really proud of myself even though I know some people would rather make more. I’m hoping to hit 100K within 3-4 years. Don’t give up recent grads!!

Both in tech in the Bay Area. I’m in Arizona visiting family and am thinking of an investment property. Does anyone have a book/course/video that they personally have used and recommend for flipping houses? I want to do some research there’s a lot of content out there.

Lot of fear in the market right now (understandably so). The situation in Ukraine is awful and the potential consequences are scary to think about.

There are some who want to sell in fear of their investments falling further. Do not do this. Hold and continue to buy more. Continue your 401k contributions, and add whatever you can afford after every paycheck into your brokerage. Those who sold the covid crash were often late buying back in.

This is the dip you're worried about.

I had a baby almost a year ago. I should start a 529 account for my child but I am originally from France which also makes her a French citizen and she could easily go to college in France for not much money. It’s pretty much free there, I have 0 Student loan debt. With that in mind, a 529 would not be super helpful if we go that route. Should I consider other options? Do you have suggestions? Thanks so much!
