I have only ever gotten one job through my network. All of the rest of my roles have come from public postings. That being said, building your network is still very important.
Do both. Social network can give you great intel on firm and practice group culture.
Both are helpful. I secured my current job through networking but all previous ones are from public postings or recruiters approached me though LinkedIn
I’m practically the opposite of M1. I’m winding down my law career after working at 5 firms and a state agency and only the latter was through a public posting.
I think its a good practice to explore both. Networking also can help with business development as well.
Each one of my jobs had a personal connection. For my first job after law school I reached out (cold call) to partners at a firm I thought did interesting work before applying. My first lateral move came through a social connection. My second lateral move came through good relationships I had with a client and attorneys from another firm they worked with. My next move came from a client relationship (in house). My next 2 moves came from peers I had initially connected with via LinkedIn and had light acquaintance from professional development/networking events.
