Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

“I've been in my current role for X years and have accomplished all the major goals for the position. I'm now looking for a position that offers greater challenges and a chance to expand my skills in [specific area] to continue my professional growth”
Such a thing as too much honesty
Unfortunately I don’t think it’s ever really acceptable to say you’re looking for more money, that’s usually implied, I usually go for the angle of looking for new experiences or looking to progress my career.
You should consider curating your “why” to align with how you want to represent yourself. When you are interviewing, you are marketing yourself to a potential employer. It can be taken as a given that you want to be paid ideally more over time as you develop your career.
Also, consider that what you tell the recruiter, HR rep, is what is then conveyed to the hiring manager/leadership team. If your why is that you want to be paid more, it is not very compelling.
I would never say that tbh. Although it’s honest it won’t get you the job. Stick to things like, “more growth and career development, leadership opportunities, and wanting more responsibility and challenges.”
Agree, never trash your current job. It looks really bad, like you’re a troublemaker. If you can find something neutral to say like it’s a better location in relation to where I live or the hours are different go with that. You could make something up like this but just be careful that it can’t be verified 🤣
You could always say “for growth opportunities” that doesn’t limit you to just one reason and it could go without saying anything additional

I would design the why so it makes sense with what you are telling them in your about you and salary components. something that justifies the pay and also has another reason for the switch!
Just say your looking for a new challenge
Tell them you've outgrown your current position and compensation.
Same message with a slightly blunted edge.
Best answer! I totally agree. Obviously you’re not just going to say “I want a higher salary“ but if it’s not somehow conveyed, companlies will take advantage and not give you what you’re looking for because they’ll think “wow, we got a really smart sucker her, let’s hire her”
Such a thing as too much honesty
You should always be politically correct for interviews. You wouldn’t trash it even if they fired you because then that looks bad on you.
If you’re looking for better challenges, then let that be a reason whatever the case - may be even though it’s money - could it be a better work life balance maybe could it be more challenges, possibly, could it be a better company that looks like it’s better doing better financially,? All those are possibly legitimate answers.
well if you say it's only about the $$$, the interviewer will probably view you being there only for the $$$.
If you want new challenges, new experiences, more career opportunities, then go in that direction.
I’m going through the same situation. The company isn’t bad but the pay is horrible! I can make more money at WaWa and I have a Master’s Degree. The higher ups reap all the benefits, unfortunately.
