How to retool from litigation to transactional work as a first year who realized too late they hate litigation when my firm isn’t looking for more transactional juniors?

You’re going to have to lateral.

like

this isn’t necessarily true.

like

People say lateral but its at least worth the conversation. Most firms would rather you retool than leave especially as a first year. Just talk to some senior partners

like

Agreed. Maybe stick it out for another 6-12 months and you can take the place of a prospective summer associate the firm planned to hire as a junior.

like

Does your firm have strong transactional workflow? That might be one reason they’re not looking for more transactional juniors.

smart

Might as well ask. A firm not willing to put recruiting resources into new transactional juniors might still be willing to have an existing associate switch.

like

Prepare your resume. Have the conversation with your current firm ASAP. Then start searching immediately if your current firm hesitates or resists the idea. You get stuck in a practice pretty quickly, so move fast.

Congratulations, you’re now interested in bankruptcy and restructuring. Lateral with that narrative

How do you know you hate litigation when you’ve barely done it?

Curious - would you consider a lateral move to a lower ranked firm if the practice group is higher ranked than at your current firm? In other words what’s more important - firm or practice group ranking?

I’m a first year that’s inching toward second year. Partners in my group say “sometimes getting thrown into the deep end is the best way to learn.” However, I feel so lost. I feel like saying the above is just an excuse for not wanting to take the time to actually teach new associates.

What does it mean if there’s a NEP at the firm who’s been there for a long time (20+ years), but never got promoted to EP? Never held leadership roles too. Does it usually mean EPs does not like the NEP enough to get promoted?

The NEP has a book of business, though no idea how much it brings in.

I lateraled into a niche practice group in Sept 2021. I also have a 1 year old and have been mostly remote since I started - but have been keeping busy tracking towards 2400-2500 hours. That said getting to know people only remote has been kind of awkward at times (email only can be tough to decipher) although as a working mom the pros vastly outweigh the cons. Yesterday my main partner asked me to come in Thursday bc he will be there and set a time to meet. Is this good/bad?? kind of nervous!

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Lateral that just went through first bonus season with the firm. Not in a major market but workload is comparable to major markets. Surprised at how low the bonus was. I received solid reviews and my annualized hours were well above the requirement. Should I approach anyone about this? Wondering if it is worth addressing or if it could compromise my standing. Thanks in advance!
