Well at least you know that HR is not your friend. Ever.
Your mistake is in not taking some of your newfound pto to interview. If your Director and VP won't back you up by putting it in writing or intervening with HR to clarify this exception, you don't have the proper support or psychologically safe environment. Move on and tell them this is what did it when they ask. Your insane mistakes are your body's way of telling you that this place is wildly out of alignment with what you value. Listen to it now before the signs become more alarming of costly. In the meantime, get everything in writing.
Yeah - 2 weeks after I started there was a company wide reorg. And the position I was hired to do was reclassified to a much junior position. I am not doing project management or using any of my skillset and doing admin assistant work and failed miserable at it.
I am looking for another job, but can’t seem to get anything. Getting interviews - but no fits.
A counter perspective here - company policy supersedes any verbal approvals, and possibly even written ones unless a very clear rationale for exception. I’d suggest speak with your director and VP and let them know rationale, and (for example) say that in exchange for these extra 6 days (over 2 weeks) of telecommuting, you will be full time in office the following 3 weeks after you return, that way the average remains in line with company policy. Put the proposed arrangement in email, with emphasis on ‘accommodation for 2 weeks, average in office will remain in line with company policy by being full time in office next 3 weeks’. Copy HR, VP and Director and ask for their support. Explain circumstances and use tone of appreciation.
Rather than losing your mind (I understand the frustration) come with a workable solution and show maturity and problem solving. Good luck OP!

Agreed! That’s a very insightful strategy that hopefully will work!
What was their reasoning? They owe you a reason
They claim that the company policy is that we need to be in the office M-W and can only wfh Th-F. I got a copy of the policy from HR and it says that we are encouraged to come into the office 3 days a week and can WFH 2 days.
However my director is also teleworking and pto’ing when he wants to.
My mistake was not to the approvals from my director and vp in writing. It was verbal. But I as I instructed to put my time in department leave calendar - which I did 3 monthes ago.
