Kirkland & Ellis Huge partner exodus at Kirkland & Ellis Boston. Any insights? I've heard the managing partner is a bit of an ineffectual imp.

Couple friends in that office. Most partners that left were non share partners.

The SP that left was pushed out.

Yes, there is not a lot of work and clients are leaving as a purported leadership shuffle is underway.

Office is very cliquey and prefers gunners from low ranked schools. This likely leads to the “ineffectual” part that people throw around (esp. when you compare the credentials of people at, say, Ropes to Kirkland). I’m not saying it’s justified (maybe it is, maybe not) but this is the reputation.

Gunners at low ranked schools don’t make an office ineffectual. Poor leadership does. There are many top caliber attorneys who went to lower ranked schools. There are also many shitty attorneys — who are lazy AF — that went to H/Y/S. Both exist at Kirkland and I have worked with both here.

What does one do to be deemed an imp?

I don’t consider 1 partner leaving an exodus. You don’t know why that person decided to leave. Boston seems to be thriving and adding practice areas.

Name the most ridiculous micro-managing by partners that you experience.

I’ll go first: MP told me that on initial emails, I am always to start with “Hello [name],” but after the initial email, I am not to address her by name again in the same thread. Initial greeting can only be “Hello [name] ” because just first name is too brisk and a “Hi [name]” is too informal. Had a 5 minute, in depth conversation as to why she prefers it this way…

Litigators—how many different cases are you on?

Been feeling spread too thin lately but I don’t know whats typical. Curious what others do. And would you mind sharing whether you’re a junior, midlevel, partner, etc??

I realize sheer number of cases doesn’t tell the whole story… obviously you can be buried on one massive case. I’m finding it hard to jump back and forth between everything I have going on right now, though, but I don’t know if the answer is to just deal with it.

Should I take more initiative? It’s my stub year and I’m getting worried. If you are a first year in a stub year, and significantly under billable hours requirement, do firms typically still give pro rated bonus? Do first year stub associates really ever hit their pro rated hours in those 2-3 months?
