Look into tax credits. I think that the last Biden budget included big tax credits for heat pumps but I’m not sure if they are active yet. I replaced 2 ac units last year 3.5 ton & 5 ton. I did not get a heat pump but I think tax credits now are worth ~$3,000. I got 16 seer. When I priced it, 21 seer was like 2x the cost of 16 seer.

Wow, when I was pricing this last year, I’m the systems I was looking at (for 2 systems) there was about a $20k difference between the seer 16 and seer 21 systems. If the difference were $1000 I would have gone seer 21 for sure.
We got 2 units of Bosch 17 SEER heat pumps last year and I’m really liking them…saved us electricity since our system was 20 years old, and I look forward to use it for heat this coming winter since we recently got solar panels as well. The 20 SEER was significantly more expensive though

Thanks! This is helpful. Our house was built in 2011, I bought two years ago - so coming up on 12-13 years
Expected life is 20 years, but I’ll knock a year or two off for poor builder quality on initial units and perhaps another year or two off for the brutal Texas summers we’ve had the last 2 years - so that gets us close to replacement window haha
