I am a foreign-trained lawyer with seven years of experience, and in the process of my moving to the U.S., I wanted to acclimatize to the U.S. legal landscape. I decided not to pursue practice for the time being, but I cannot seem to get any paralegal or legal assistant jobs.

I am on my 132nd application (I have a list hehe) and it's either I get rejected or ghosted.

I live in Virginia, and would love to hear about opportunities.

I’m not in VA and don’t have insight but have you looked at local paralegal associations or other groups where you can network?

Depending on where you were trained, the legal system might be too different and firms might not think you have relevant experience (from personal experience starting my law degree abroad and then moving to the US and getting a JD).

I'll consider this and look into networking first! Thank you so much!

I might look to non-legal support jobs. You wouldn’t be a particularly attractive candidate for these roles, IMO. Experience in foreign law doesn’t necessarily translate to admin experience in US law. Maybe consider contracts/subcontracts management roles?

Thank you for your insight. I appreciate it! Maybe my opportunities do lie elsewhere.

Make sure you are using the standard Harvard resume. I was in a similar situation when I first relocated and eventually realized my resume didn’t align with the Harvard standard. If you speak any languages “on demand” such as Spanish, you should be able to find roles in immigration, criminal, personal injury firm.

Hi! This helps me by a mile. Thank you! I appreciate your response!

Question! I just moved(transferred) to another team of my company and received new title, graphic & creative services. I was a senior graphic designer at the previous team. What do you think about my new title? I know that title is not a big thing but why I feel like my title is downgraded here… Good thing is my jobs here at my current team are what I really wanted to do. This is amazing. I love my new team and people here! Super healthy working environment! But just curious about the title.

Is it common to offer signing bonuses for product managers? I've only worked in small companies and I'm currently interviewing at a much larger company. I am expecting an offer this week, but the salary isn't quite where I want it to be. A signing bonus of 5 or 10k would make me feel so much better (obviously) but it would put me right where I want to be for salary this year. I'm taking a cut in salary to consider this new job but I like the company and they actually offer benefits

Any other first year associates feel like their firms don’t really appreciate how much COVID/WFH has stunted their development? I’ve been working at a biglaw firm for 5 months and don’t feel at all like a part of the team, and am extremely stressed out by the isolation of WFH most days. I’m not really sure that anyone at the firm realizes this is happening.

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week. Why am I taking the (honestly justified) blame for this? Surely it should be obvious that I’m just the messenger here.

7 year lawyer here. Been with the same big national firm all 7 years (not BigLaw) doing complex litigation. Been working remote a long time due to moving around for wife’s job. As a result of the moving was bumped off partner track. I’m looking at a great small firm that will be a practice change (but still litigation). I’m told they’re looking for someone with less experience and they’re skeptical because of my experience. It’s frustrating. How do I overcome this?

I’m a 2016 grad making $120k in a small to mid-size regional firm. I’m based in Nashville. My firm’s management is trying to survey other small to mid-size regional firms to get a feel for where the comp is now, especially in light of the big law increases that are making headlines, and to see just how far below market we may have fallen. Any additional data points from smaller regional firms (especially if you have a presence in Nashville or across the SE) would be appreciated! TIA

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
