I am a DAEP science and health teacher for 6-12. I would have to say the relationships I have have forged with my students over the last couple of years. It is easy for people to forget that these obnoxious, entitled, disruptive students are just scared kids that feel like every single person has given up on them.
Getting to know them I often find that they are neglected, uneducated, and terrified of what their future holds. I give them someone who believes in them with my whole heart and they know it.
Bright sides would be the number of students who came through, often on the edge of dropping out, that make it to graduation. So dang proud of them especially when they start bubbling over to tell me of their future plans.
I am an aide. Challenges: Yesterday I was hit in the head with an airborne iPad. Self contained classroom. Grades two through four. Many of these children belong in therapeutic schools but therapeutic schools are understaffed so they remain in their public school. I used to love working with children with autism. But we now have Cross category. Autism, behavior disorder, emotional disorder, Angelman syndrome. I am being hit kicked bitten and my hair pulled and water bottles and iPads thrown at me. It’s a real mess
