The biggest reason to get into Alt Ed is for the kids that have no voice or no clear path for their learning styles at their school
Learning styles are not based in science! All people learn better when given multiple modalities. We know math should be taught in the concrete - representational - abstract framework.
Remember it is not about you, it is about the students. I struggled with that for awhile. I would put 3 hours prep into a lesson, just to have the kids behave terribly thus making the lesson a failure in my eyes (it made me feel I had wasted 3 hours!). I've learned situations like that are actually opportunities to help the kids manage their behavior. Long after they forget most of what was taught in the lesson, the hope is that they still remember the social skills I taught them on that day. Just some food for thought... Also, NEVER spend 3 hours on an alternative education lesson! Prepare yourself, create a framework that allows each student to learn independent of the rest of the class, and understand you will have to make adjustments on the fly. Lastly, don't focus on the end product (student completing an assignment, or passing a class, or even graduating), focus on the process (connecting students to resources and outside services, teaching and reteaching social and study skills). Hope this helps!!
It begins with you. Strive to identify and confront your own pains, triggers, biases, and paradigms.
When difficulties arise, ask yourself “what has happened in this life, to bring about this incident?”
Rapport, rapport, rapport.
These students have dealt with “fake people” their whole life. Be authentic. They are expecting you to abandon/fail them.
Model the strength of apologies and forgiveness.
It is 3 summer classes online for me. I don't already have a certificate to teach high school which is the reason why for the classes.
Read everything you can about trauma informed care. Also, the book Raising Human Beings by Ross Greene is wonderful. Also, check the students’ reading skills! Many of these students don’t read well, but were never identified...read or watch anything by David Kilpatrick and then check for phonemic awareness - without this skill your students will NOT be able to read well...go to www.thepasttest.com for a free! assessment by Kilpatrick. His $50 book, Essentials of Reading Success is worth its weight in gold. (No, I get nothing for plugging his book.) Teach math with hand’s on activities. Another great book is Make it Stick...all about how we learn - we need to make sure our strategies are evidenced based. A growth mindset is important...IQ is not what we used to think and effortful learning pays off, but our students need to understand this is true. Don’t take things personally and have a sense of humor. Good luck!
Does the district require you to have your 952 license? It usually is two classes that can be done online.
Each group is different, but the thing I always keep in mind is discipline. Communicate calmly and don’t stand over the kiddos. Some of the kids may not realize, depending on their background, that their behaviors aren’t acceptable
