Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

I was offered a job about a month ago and the lady interviewing me literally said, "With your experience you can run the whole office front to back with your eyes closed, so I'm not worried if I go on vacation or have to be out." So, then I start thinking I'm going to get this job and get a decent salary finally for my 20plus years of experience and my Associate's Degree. I was offered the job, but at $14 an hour. I almost fainted. That was the biggest insult ever in my life. The lady interviewing me really thought she was offering me a good pay. She was driving a dang Lexus and married the Dr that owned the practice. She knew better. I told her no and how could she even think I could pay 1/2 my bills with $14 an hour. I told her that was a slap in my face. My mama got mad at me for not taking the job. I told my mom my experience alone is worth over $25 an hour starting out and that doesn't include all my trainings and my degree. It's only me so how do these companies expect their employees to make it in the world. I don't understand and I sure don't understand the rent these days. Landlords now want you to make 3xs your what you rent is going to be to be eligible to rent. No one makes that kind of money and if they did they sure would NOT be renting. Your mortgage would be 10xs cheaper if everyone could buy. I wished it was against the law to charge so much in rent. I mean those Landlords don't need that much money. I asked a few landlords why they charge so dang much and their answers were so dumb. They all said, most renters leave the house with over 10,000 worth of damages. I said ok I understand but if your renters rent over 2 years which is normal then where is the money they give you? They pay so much in rent they have well over enough to fix the damages but NO that's how they drive expensive cars and 4 story houses. That's fine, but they still have enough to fix the damazes. ONLY 1 out 3 rented houses really has much damage to begin with. Ugh, I wished it was against the law the charge more than the actual mortgage in rent.
Agreed. Im facing eviction n gonna be homeless in a week. Applying for assistance is complicated and they have 30 days to make a decision. When i have only 2 weeks after receiving the eviction notice. Makes no sense. Unfortunately after my child died i shortly lost my job and my mental health has me struggling to stay afloat. N no family members alive to help. I lost my mom when i was 22. Never met the dad. Any how. Im looking for a job. N i feel the same way with my experience and knowledge and such im worth more then 14. An hr. That at full time doesnt even begin to cover all my bills. And expenses.makes me sad and angry with our society today. Thanks for sharing
I've heard that putting zeroes in that field could get you eliminated by the screening software. The conventional wisdom lately seems to be to do some research on what would be standard pay for the role, and put down a number that's in the middle of that range. That might at least get you past the ATS, and if you're in an interview you can always try to negotiate based on whatever the offer may be.
I would encourage putting a pay range you know for sure you can live and survive on. too many people will low ball themselves because they think the recruiter will follow up due to the low salary.
I never throw out a number first if I can help it. I always ask them what the range is for the role. I then tell them whether or not my expectations fall in that range.
You can’t do that on an application where it’s a required field
I put "open"
I always submit “going rate”
Is there a salary range listed on the job description. If so, maybe put a number near the middle of the range. If not, try to do some research on the typical pay range for the job is, and use that number.
