How much more money were you asking for? I wouldn't want to work for a place that is going to quibble over a few thousand bucks per year.
Also, even if you win this battle, you may lose the war if they recoup the concessions they make today with your future comp.

EY4 - Sure, there are valid business reasons why this employer couldn't meet OP's comp requirements. They could just say so and it's no harm, no foul.
However, leveraging other candidates as a way to pressure OP into accepting a lower offer is classless and unprofessional. That's where the sin is.
Find a new recruiter. They are supposed to work for your best interests. My opinion would be to not leave (unless your current job is that miserable). Wait until you get what you want. Don’t settle when you are changing companies.
For real.. didn’t you already turn down the offer initially?
They may be trying match the salary request with a different position?
