If you give your partner and HR 2 week notice by today, then tomorrow they tell you "your last day will be today" and this not because you are going to competitor firm, and you will not get any money with these two week. i wonder why we need to keep give two week notice, if employer keep doing like this

If they don’t pay the 2 weeks, they won’t get the notice anymore. Did this actually happen, or are you speculating?

like

They typically will payout the 2 weeks to avoid having to payout unemployment, from what I understand. I would see if you qualify for at least that for the two weeks

Usually if you go to a competitor, Deloitte won’t make you work the two weeks but you will get paid for them. I’ve never heard of a situation in the 6 years I’ve been here where you have to turn in your computer AND you don’t get paid. That’s pretty ridiculous

like

That wasn’t the case for me at KPMG - have you put in a 2 week notice before lol

yes

I have heard BDO does this.

I start at a new firm in July. My company manual says "4 weeks notice" minimum.. I think I'm doing 2 weeks but aftet reading this im conflicted

also want my accrued pto paid out. its like 20 days worth. I wonder what the law is for NY

You’ll get a full PTO payout. Divide your base salary by 2080 and that’s your hourly rate; multiply that number by your accrued PTO hours and that should be the gross payout before taxes

I think if they don’t like you or don’t think you’ll be useful in your role during those last 2 weeks they’ll end it immediately. If they feel you’ll actually get stuff done or they wanna retain a positive relationship with you, they’ll let you stay on (because let’s face it, employers are hurting for talent right now). I gave a 3 week notice and RSM is allowing me to finish my project, even though I am going to a competitor

yeah, but after this i think i will never go back to BDO again. if i am keeping my career in public firm

like

I haven’t heard it happening a lot, but my old company did that to me. I would never go back to them, and if I thought I wouldn’t get paid for my two weeks when I change jobs again eventually, I’m basically going to drop off my computer and leave.

Even if they let you go the next day, BDO generally still pays the two weeks as far as I know.

Can you reach out to the new firm to see if you can start sooner? That happened to me before and they were able to move up my start date.

Which country are you in? Does it not differ with the jurisdiction you're in?
