Well that depends does your seat come with a air Marshall that will pummel and tazer you with your reservation?!!! Lol sorry couldn't resist.๐๐๐
You are going to japan for a great experience on miles. It was worth it. Go have fun and don't worry about bullshit like cpp. Life is too short.
1.64 cpp is decent. 1.5-1.7 is a pretty reliable range for United points.
Business or economy?
It's fine - I collect tons of points from various ventures and I tell people curious about redeem rate all the time that if it's worth it to you (you need to be there, that's the only time you can go, etc) a 2.7 cpp redemption to Brazil in August isn't something you'll ever use
It's better you use them now - points are constantly being devalued, so holding onto them in hopes of getting an extra .26 cpp isn't worth it!
Is that economy? I booked 40k to HK in economy from West Coast
I try to get at least 2 cents per mile or I pay cash instead (2.5 cents per SPG point). So, in this case, i wouldn't consider this a good value. What about redeeming for business class to Japan? The difference in miles between economy and business is a much smaller percentage difference than the cash difference, so I typically only redeem miles for long haul flights in premium cabins (business and first) or economy on short but expensive sectors (intra-Caribbean, intra-Africa, Galapagos), for which a distance-based program, like BA or ANA, is great.
Dunno about UA but I try to keep it above 4 cpp when booking AA internationally. Did a big long haul at 5cpp last year and 8cpp this year...
I booked one way Chicago to Tokyo for 35k on United and the corresponding flight was $800. I think one way flights are a better "deal" on points than RT
Theoretically if you had CSR you could've booked that flight for ~76k points, plus a UA reward miles based on your status ($1150x11 reward miles with 1k status?) so you could've done a bit better, but not by much.
@bcg3 but how do you plan to get back...?
Thanks all! Good to know. I'm definitely excited but just wanted general rules of thumb. Appreciate it. @A2 for some reason the same / similar flights weren't available on CSR portal
