I didn’t start in tech; I spent five years in hospitality before making the jump. That background in high-stress customer service has actually been my secret weapon when it comes to stakeholder management and de-escalating "Level 1" site outages. We’re seeing more and more "non-traditional" backgrounds succeed in our engineering pods lately.

If you transitioned into tech from another field, what is the one "soft skill" you use daily that surprised you?

Customer-facing roles, in any industry, are so underrated. You learn so much from those. I did a lot of volunteer work at a performing arts theater, and being able to turn messy projects straight and communicate with different people has been something I constantly fall back on at work.

A soft skill that got me where I am is definitely asking for help. I think so many people let their ego get in the way and they don't want to ask for help, which really holds them back. A lot of what got me to where I am is just being humble enough to say that I don't have all the answers and to ask for help from those around me.

Coming from outside tech often builds strong communication and calm under pressure. Those skills make a huge difference when translating technical issues for stakeholders and keeping teams steady during incidents.

Some Business Intelligence/Analyst roles are very data heavy. I wonder why these roles do not have the term “data” in them, and wonder if it’s to keep the salary lower than it should be. I have colleagues doing intense data science tasks as BI Analysts, and can’t help but feel indignant on their behalf because when hearing their job title, one would underestimate their technical ability.

I would like to know what I should be shooting to make? I really like my job and ideally don't want to move companies, but would like some realistic expectations for what I should be earning.

Hello recruiters, happy Monday!

I want to know why recruiters ask me in an interview if I am looking at other opportunities, or if I am interviewing at other companies. If I say yes they will ask at what stage I am.

I just want to know the reason behind it and if there is a right answer to this question!

When you recruiters say at the end of a 15 min call.
“I will get back to you by the end of this week” does that really mean “your not right for this position”? Because this whole thing is a waste of time.
