Agreed, we get a bad rep from Hollywood/influencer culture but I’ve found LA to be anything but superficial. There are millions of people here, from longtime Angelenos to first generation immigrants, and so much history. Anyone who complains about LA being superficial hasn’t taken the time to get to know the city imo.
That's so true. I miss LA so much I could cry. Had to move to N.C. for Husband's work, and it IS cheaper, but...
I agree with you. It’s all in your friend group.
That stereotype generally applies to people who work in Hollywood. In that case, I found it to be true. Lots of strivers, ghosters, bullshit artists. I think it's just the nature of the biz. Met much cooler people when I changed to advertising.

Love hearing this feedback, and I agree. As a native Angeleno who has lived in other major cities, I find it really easy to stay away from the ‘fake’ LA component. The city is so diverse and so big that it’s hard to stereotype the entire city and experience, and the vast majority of areas and people are (in my experience) generally more genuine then other places.
Outside of people hustling to make their mark in showbiz (which has been gradually decreasing through the years and
more so post-Covid), my sense is people are here for the sun, beach, opportunity, etc.
Yes! I find that most of the people I meet here really value community, getting outside, getting exercise, experiencing/trying new things, being with people, etc. When I lived in Boston I felt people placed value on a lot of superficial things like the clothes they wear, restaurants they go to, the job they have. A lot of people put more effort into their image rather than enjoying their lives. I know far fewer people in LA with designer bag collections than I did in boston, even though they have the means
