I don’t own any luxury watches but I’m interested in getting my first Rolex. Plan to own forever and pass down to future kids. I put my name down at an AD for a submariner but in the meantime I have been looking at datejusts and GMTs on the grey market. Thoughts for a good first Rolex?

I’m a big explorer 1 fan. It’s a tool watch, not too pricey and I love no date watches because they’re super easy to set if you don’t wear all the time.

Can’t go wrong with the Submariner, especially the no date model

Highly durable watch and it always looks great

Personally shy away from the datejust

like

Why do you shy away from the datejust?

Putting your name down on a list won’t get you that watch. It’s not FIFO. They have no idea what watches they’ll receive from the mother ship (or how often) and they need to keep some inventory on hand at all time for the VIP’s.

You need to become friendly with your sales rep and come in occasionally to chat and look at watches. That way when your rep gets an allocation they think about their good pal OP and how they can make your day.

like

🤷‍♂️ I’ve literally only bought in demand stainless watches.

My rep seems to like me, so after he’s taken care of his VIP’s he gives me a ring… Have you tried throwing any of your services their way and see if that endears you?

I got rolexes from multiple ADs without visits. Just check in via text should be enough if you are running against time to get one.

If you’re not in a hurry, I like the GMTs. If anything, they represent our work with all the travel we do

smart

I’d love a GMT!

funny

Your children won’t know if you got it from an AD or grey. Do what you want.

I would go into multiple stores and put your name down. A sub should be no problem to get. I also have a datejust as well! Absolutely love it

Get the watch YOU like. These are big purchases and very personal. It should be yours, chosen for your own reasons.

A salesperson told me for inheritance watches it’s less about preference and more about what watch your kid sees you wearing all the time - so this is accurate
