Then try to merge my accounts later? I fly weekly on a fairly short (<2hr route) and would only get platinum through this challenge. Otherwise I’ll likely only reach gold. https://www.delta.com/content/www/en_US/skymiles/manage-my-account/merge-duplicate-accounts.html
It is possible... but my data point was several years after the last Delta activity before starting the new account and waiting several months after the challenge to merge them.
The real question is whether you will be flying enough to maintain Platinum after the challenge ends. If not, don’t blow your wad again.
I think I’ll be able to maintain it moving forward. What do they merge exactly? MQMs, MQSs, MQD? Miles? Trip history?
MQ activity won’t matter as that is year-to-year. If you try to merge in accounts this year, they’ll catch what you are trying to pull. My merge - with several years gap - took several weeks to accomplish. In my case, I’d had a name change, an address change, and a firm change (meaning an email I no longer could access) during the gap years so it was entirely plausible that a new account had been opened for me because I couldn’t locate my old one.
You’ll get historic miles flown for MM status (which I’m guessing you are a long way off from) and any earned/unspent miles.
Yep I only have 44k miles, 20k MQMs, and 27 MQSs for the year. MQD was pretty easy to qualify for. I wasn’t sure if the extra segments and qualifying miles past platinum would be possible to carryover for 2019.
You have a good point though, maybe I’ll wait a bit before asking to merge, or maybe it would be best to just use up the skymiles and call it a day.
