I’m in my 50s and have been in NYC Ad world since my 20s. It has changed so so much in that time. Almost all the fun has been taken out. It’s turned into drudgery and over promises and understaffed and call-center like work spaces.
I loved my career in advertising ( mostly). But never would stay in this job industry if I was just starting out today.

CD1, you single? Wow. Love this for you!
I posted the same thing on here few months ago. Now laid off 🙂
To Account Manager 1: Sensing it? I've been sending signals and still employed. :(
Anyone want to buy laundromats with me?
lol my husband and I almost did this!!
Maybe you can. But in a different way, or in a different place. Pivot. Make your life better by removing a bit of the pressure and concerns. Do what you can do with the tools and resources you have. Don’t exceed your energy and health. And send me your book and I can maybe help introducing you for a few peeps.
This is kind and generous. The industry is not done yet with such people in it. To the OP: you are welcome to reach out for help from JPL. We have free resources. HTTPS://www.jobpropulsionlab.com/free-resources

I’ve been saying that for a couple of decades now, but the need to eat and to sleep indoors is pretty significant.
I felt like this then also got laid off, fell into freelancing, doubled my salary and worked half as much. And it's allowed me to break up with toxic clients/agencies - you can have the power!
Really thinking that this is the way. Thanks for the hope!
Make sure to take all your vacation personal and sick days for the year!
I felt like that and got laid off. And frankly, I hated that stupid job and it was awful. still not mad. not exactly roses, either. but better.
Glad you're in a better headspace
Or you can feel the layoff as well. Aka burnout.

You'd be surprised what you can do.
Same. I hate it here. About three years ago my body literally started fighting back from the chronic stress. I now have a neurological disorder and chronic pain. Someday I’ll get the courage to quit and follow my heart.
I’ve been thinking about it for years. I just don’t know what to do. The thought of starting completely over after 12 years in this industry (and no experience elsewhere as I started right out of school) is so daunting and scary. I know I can do it, but it’s just scary, and it feels impossible to choose a path. Real estate, interior design, or just freelance creative work. But I appreciate the push! Have you exited or are planning to?

Omg. I am having that kind of day, too. I am on the job search side though. Today was grocery shopping day, and as i walked around, I was thinking how much longer can I hold on, and pretend this is normal.
me too. I'm also underpaid too.
Me neither. I have never once been happy in this industry
Lots of good advice here. But OP, what exactly is troubling you?
False urgency, double productions, small team, I have a child that I can't be fully present for because work is a 24hr thing apparently. It weighs on you after a while
