I don't think you need to feel bad about this. Since we're not white, I think finding somewhere supportive of us regardless should be the goal. Obviously it'd be nice to work somewhere supportive and diverse, but I think if you're happy where you work that's good enough. We're not the people who created the shortage of diversity in the office, so I wouldn't take the blame for it tbh.
I don’t know that I prioritize diversity as there are very few Black people specifically in my area. But I will always ask to speak to Black people and I’m not going somewhere that has 0.
This!!!!!
Totally agree. I think a lot of people feel this way, but won’t openly admit it. I’m on some diversity committee type stuff internally and it just feels performative. I care not just about having other attorneys of color around, but also about having the same work opportunities as white counterparts because at the end of the day, that is what gets you promoted. So unless a firm is also making sure that happens, to me all the other stuff is just fluff to put on a brochure.
If I looked for diversity I’d never have a job
I think this makes sense. I’m usually one of less than a handful and I’m used it honestly.
I think it’s easier to get hired at firms that lack diversity. But it’s also harder to fit in and get work.
I must admit to be the same. I am accepting of the fact that diversity is not really a thing for most firms. It's just a fancy word that doesn't really have a meaning unless you are a person of color.
