What are the chances of getting a lower offer because you're POC applying at a fairly large law firm? Not big law or anything but still. Friend and I both got offers, came out of the same school and have very similar internship experience. He's white and I'm not, his offer is significantly higher. How low is low enough to walk away?

Hmm I would hate to jump to that conclusion. I think I would need more info. Are your resumes identical in terms of GPA and past experience? Also like someone asked above did you negotiate and did they?

This has happened to me! Glad your friend was transparent enough to tell you their salary

like

Same here! Salary transparency is so necessary between colleagues.

Definitely happened to me and someone else I know at my large firm. We talked and found out others were getting offered much more. When I attempted to negotiate higher pay before accepting their offer, they told me take it or leave it. Nearly $100k difference.

They’ll get a nice Glassdoor review when I leave. I’ll tell you one thing… I see others working at midnight and 3 am at the firm. I am not doing that unless there’s something major sue the next day that could cost me my license. Computer gets shut by 10 pm each day.I’m not doing that for this salary. This isn’t BigLaw, and I’m not getting BigLaw pay 😂 recruiters target my firm for recruiting because it’s well known they have BigLaw hours without anywhere near BigLaw pay (and no I’m not in ID, though that’s common in ID.)

I worked at a large regional firm in NYC a few years ago. 2 other white girls I was friendly with. White girl A, one year ahead of me — her salary was 5K more. White girl B, one year behind me — her salary was 45K less than mine. I’m happy we had that discussion and disclosed salaries. She started looking for a new job.

like

HR with play with your salary. End/beginning of the year is the best time for starting salaries.

like

If you look at in-house salary guides, POC make less on average so this is not surprising even in a law firm context. I feel like we need to be very aggressive in salary negotiations just to get a fair deal.

Gpa? Clerkship? Law review? Diff practice areas? If literally everything is the same they have some explaining to do…

Not at a law firm, but this happened to my friend’s friend. She had 3 years of experience and was offered $X. White bro was a new grad and was offered $X+$5k.

like

I am Caucasian, but anything less than what he got, I would counter the offer.

Are you both applying right out of law school? Are the offers for the same city?

like

i suspect this happened to me too

like

How diverse is the firm you got an offer from currently? That may be able to help us tell.

like

I'd be shocked if most firms, even not big law, don't have some form of lock step

like

A2 lmao we all thought that then graduated law school

What are the respective gpas?

like

I need SATs too. How'd you do in that 4th grade spelling quiz???

Did he just negotiate higher?

like

I'm here for the tea because this is wild.

like

Caveat: I don't practice employment law -BUT if your credentials are genuinely the same, you both had offers in similarly well-funded practice groups, and you have a good offer elsewhere, I’d file an EEOC complaint.

like

Can you be more specific with what your offer is and what your friends offer is?

If it’s a non lockstep firm, practice group is huge.

I’d come back with a counter. Are you still in time for that?

Otherwise, if you turned it down, file a charge of discrimination under Title VII and settle with them. Use your friend as comparative evidence—an applicant of a different race who was hired into the same role, with similar qualifications, and yet offered higher pay. Argue that the employer has no legitimate reason for the difference.

Hi, I'm graduating with an MPA this month, and I'm having trouble getting through the application process for jobs in the public and non-profit sectors. For context, I got laid off last year, and before that, I was with an organization where I worked for five years as a program coordinator. I'm looking for general advice. What the current climate for jobs is, the best strategies to apply, and the best resources or tools that might help.

Although Amazon has instituted a hiring freeze and layoffs are probably on their way, I went through the loop for a security engineer position at AWS. Before I attended the final interviews, Amazon placed the hiring freeze and called me to ask if I wanted to go ahead or cancel my application. I am a 5 year experienced developer and am applying for position as a developer in bank. I have cleared the assignment, interview and soft skills. I next have an offer interview scheduled but it’s with the IT chapter lead and the Manager instead of the recruiter. That feels bit weird and I feel they would talk me on a low salary because I am “not so experienced”. I did interview at another company earlier and they refused to pay the salary I asked for because I wasn’t senior enough. Any tips ?

I’m an aspiring court reporter. Kind of weird to ask here, I know, but is there any place I can go to link with other black reporters? I’ve tried looking on ig and fb but there’s nothing exclusive for people of color. I even created a bowl here and shnada so far. Also, is it common for you to use the same reporter for different jobs? I’m wondering if I could work freelance and maybe have contracts with a few solid attorneys. So many horror stories around Court Reporting firms. TIA for reading!
