I feel like every time I tell a recruiter I’m open to nontraditional roles, they hear desperate and fine with a 40% pay cut. Like yes, I want something more creative, cross-functional, even weird. But that doesn’t mean I’m willing to go from six figures to glorified intern. Why are all the interesting jobs underpaid compared to the grind? Does the work-life balance tax always cost this much? Is there a way to make a nontraditional pivot without financially starting over?

Extremely frustrated that after 4+ years and multiple asks, I’m not getting the in-field construction experience I’ve asked for. I know that my designs could be better if I could see how things are actually built but I get slapped in the face with “I need you in the office designing/drafting” or “there’s no budget to have you go out” and then sends an intern to inspect instead. Got offered 68k after 2 years as a contractor (62.5k) doing project management/business admin in a tech department at a Fortune 500 bank. I have an A.S degree and working on my bachelor’s/masters may 2024. I negotiated to 84k NYC. I have seen interns get offered 38 per hour (79k) for internship positions with a similar role.
