A bad boss doesn’t teach you how to reach the expectations they set. This isn’t someone you’ll learn from and they likely won’t change. The best approach is to keep your head down focus on your craft, don’t take it personally, and search for an agency or a CD that uplifts young creatives and go work for them.
Ok
I hate hearing things like this, unfortunately there are a lot of folks in the industry that forget what it’s like to be junior, navigating new clients, new specs, new expectations, a new vertical etc. I’m always the first on my team to defend my junior colleagues and try to set them up for success in anyway I can, whether that’s by me mentoring them, or finding another resource who has the experience to help.
But I do think those in leadership are too quick to discredit new talent. Keep your head up! Reach out across departments if you need to, there might be a producer or a strategist who can at least empathize, and help you navigate your unique situation.
For what it’s worth, chances are those difficult to work with leaders are causing difficulties with other teammates and departments too... when I know I have pull and the proper staffing to support resource changes, I’ve requested not to work with people who belittle those on my team.
You don’t need a CD to mentor you. Reach out to a senior or mid team! If there’s truly no one, try reaching out across departments. My mentor as a junior was the head of finance — she was thrilled to connect.
Some of the big award shows do mentorship programs. Also, sometimes folks offer mentorship chats on LinkedIn. There’s always a way.
I know it isnt the same as having a mentor inside the agency, but maybe you can look for mentors on https://talktoacreativedirector.com
This is a rough place to be in. It's extra work, but you can try casually sharing your work ahead of time for their blessing/early feedback so they're more likely to be on the same page as you. But it's also possible it's political and you are being thrown under the bus regardless of your quality of work. Either way it's not an ideal place to be

I mean, sometimes it's the client that doesn't want a junior team so this may be a business decision.
