Because the industry thrives on fear...divide and conquer. They’ve convinced us that speaking up = losing work, and too many of us buy it. We don’t need more hustle culture; we need a strike.
Union talk still feels like whispering a secret, even when it’s the most obvious solution. I brought it up in a writers’ room once and got some LOOKS. It’s fear of being labeled “difficult,” of losing gigs in a cutthroat industry. But silence is what’s keeping us stuck. Execs bank on our hesitation. I think the shift starts in small, trusted convos like one-on-ones, shared stories, building solidarity before going loud. Normalize it at the ground level.
I completely agree. Unfortunately it’s encouraged to squash unions at any opportunity so people feel scared to talk about them in the first place even if they would benefit the whole industry in the long run.
Must be Nexstar 😝
Totally agree—it’s wild how many people whisper about burnout and low pay but freeze up the moment unions are mentioned. It feels like there’s this lingering fear of retaliation, even when organizing is meant to protect us. The stigma is real, but the only way things will change is if more of us are willing to have the uncomfortable conversations out loud.
